Members of the Madison community and their families are invited to join the UW-Madison Mathematics Department and the Madison Experimental Lab (MXM) on June 2nd from 12-3 for an afternoon of lunch, mathematical activities, and a public lecture.

Lunch will be served at 12 PM. Students in middle and high school will then have the opportunity to participate in a variety of mathematical activities, solving mathematical puzzles on translation surfaces, crocheting topological monsters, exploring a collection of physical models, and more! At 2 PM, Jean-Luc Thiffeault will give a public lecture on the mathematics behind taffy pullers!

Activities will take place in Van Vleck Hall B224 and the public lecture will take place in Van Vleck B130. We hope to see you there!

Congratulations to Dallas Albritton and Paul Apisa! They were selected as 2 of the 21 Sloan fellows in Mathematics for the US and Canada for 2026. We are so proud to have them representing our department 🥳🎉

GRAD RECAP: A week ago we celebrated and honored our newest alumni from both the graduate and undergraduate programs! We loved seeing everyone and honoring all the hard work that has been put in over the years. Congratulations and On, Wisconsin 🥳🦡

Today, May 12th, is International Women in Mathematics Day and, to celebrate, we wanted to highlight some of the amazing women throughout our department! Thank you to Marissa Loving, Laurel Ohm, Autumn Kent, Betsy Stovall, Sarah Strikwerda, and all of the other women representing our department, the work you do inspires us all 🎉

The Math Department recently had three professors all named as recipients of the 2026 Simons Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship is only awarded to 50 professors across all math departments in both the US and Canada and helps to fund the costs of research leave outside of the classroom. Congratulations to Professors Alexei Poltoratski, Dima Arinkin, and Andreas Seeger!

Huge congratulations to this semester’s MXM Lab students on their outstanding work! Last week all ten groups showcased their work at the spring Open House as we celebrated their accomplishments in research from the year 👏👏
