Join us at the Atelier for some more great classes this summer! Lydia Zoells is returning to teach two workshops: Beyond the Color Wheel and Solvent Free Oil Painting ✨

You can find the full course descriptions and sign up by going to www.atwoodatelier.com

✨ Beyond the Color Wheel ✨
- This class is a color theory intensive for the figurative oil painter. Through lecture, demo, and exercises, we will develop practical approaches to color, beginning with the concepts of hue, value, and chroma/intensity. We will discuss the qualities of pigment and oil paint, including tinting strength, transparency, and lightfastness, and explore how to use our paints with an understanding of their specific physical properties. Beginning with still lives and later working with a live model, we will use this knowledge to approach color mixing for both accuracy and creative color palettes. Students will explore various limited palettes and color moods in a series of studies and small paintings. All students are encouraged to develop their own personal approach to color through the exercises in the class.
- Monday July 6th - Wednesday July 8th; 9am - 12pm

✨ Solvent Free Oil Painting ✨
- This workshop will explore safe practices and helpful strategies for at-home oil painters without access to a separate studio or adequate ventilation for solvent use. This is NOT a class on water-soluble oils: this is a course exploring how to use regular oil paints without the solvents that many contemporary painters rely on, and how to make the most of an oil painting practice in a home setting. This is a good class for students wanting to get started with oil painting, but equally useful for those with an established practice who want to remove solvents or learn more about solvent-free methods.
- Saturday, July 11th; 10am - 4pm (lunch 12-1)
- Supplies included option available!

We have some exciting news to share…the art of Atwood Atelier is going on the road once more!

The Wisconsin Museum of Contemporary Art in Wausau, WI, is hosting the show “Figure Paintings by Atwood Atelier Artists” from June 18th - September 17th. Over a two dozen atelier artists have contributed works to the show, and we’re thrilled to share their paintings and drawings with you! With a focus on pieces created at the atelier, artists were also to share a selection of their work from outside of the atelier, providing a look at their artistic practice beyond the studio.

There will be a closing reception on Thursday, September 17th from 5-8pm, and the exhibit will be open during museum hours the rest of the summer!

We hope you’ll go check out the exhibit, and share with folks in the Wausau area! Swipe to see just SOME of the work being transported to Wausau!

A glimpse inside our most recent extended long pose with our model, James 🎨

Sometimes attendees choose to focus their attention beyond the pose, capturing the scene of the artists themselves, the studio in action. A lovely perspective on the practice of working from a live model.

Heads up! There won’t be extended long poses in July and August, they’ll be back this fall!

It’s not too late to sign up for next week’s workshop with Andrew Sjodin: The Alla Prima Still Life

Go to www.atwoodatelier.com to sign up!

This approachable, fun workshop is designed for students of all levels—even those who are completely new to painting. I begin with a three-hour demonstration on the first morning. For a three day workshop students will create three simple still lifes over the first two days (one each session: first afternoon, second morning, second afternoon).

On the final day of the three day workshop students will set up and work on a slightly more complex still life for the full day. By the end, most students complete four paintings. The five day workshop varies from the three day by including an additional demonstration on the third morning and the opportunity to complete two full-day alla prima paintings.

Topics covered: materials, palette and color considerations, composition, paint handling, value-keying, lighting, and individualized questions and guidance.

* Monday June 15th - Wednesday June 17th
* 9:30am - 4:30pm (lunch 12:30 - 1:30)
