How Dyslexia is a Different Brain, Not a Disease Students, parents, and teachers must understand that the dyslexic’s brain isn’t “broken” or deficient, just organized in a different way. And there is specialized reading instruction specifically for the different brain structure.

Why I do this…
“I’ve been part of Walbridge for 16 years. The first 10 were spent as a parent/parent volunteer and then the job of part-time receptionist was available and I took it. Soon, 12 hours a week morphed to 18 hours and week and then, on paper 33 hours per week. This truly opened my eyes to the commitment and caring of the staff of the school for the kids who were attending Walbridge for a variety of reasons, I was already eternally grateful to the school for what I witnessed in my own kids. Now that admiration is off the charts.
Very recently, quite by chance, I bumped into the mom of a Walbridge 8th grade graduate who went on to attend Edgewood High School. She told me that her daughter, Avery, had applied for, and received a scholarship to her dream college. What Avery’s mom said next brought tears of joy to me. Avery’s essay was how Walbridge had changed her course and gave her the path she was now on. Attending college and feeling like, “yes, I can do this; I know I can do this because Walbridge taught me and showed me that I can”. Avery was kind enough to share her essay and gave permission to publish some of that essay in this Newsletter. Just thinking about it brings tears of joy to my eyes.
Avery is not alone in her success. Anne shared her thoughts about her daughter’s experience at Walbridge and how Sophie is a happy, confident, freshman in college.
One of many moments for me was when a kid, after two years, looked at me and said “Hi Ms. Jo” with a smile. It took two years for this student to be able to feel confident enough to do that, but he did and I was so excited about it I ran to tell his homeroom teacher.
Whenever a former student stops in to visit and let us know that they are doing well and have fond memories of their days at Walbridge….yeah, that’s why the staff past and present do this. I say with pride that I am part of it.” – Jo L.

"Walbridge is the only school I've attended where I have felt safe and had teachers who cared about me and whether I was learning. It gave me a new outlook on school. I look forward to it now. No more dread." – Eli

“I can’t thank you enough for what you have done in one semester for my grandson, Ethan. He has actually started liking school thanks to you and his grades have shown it. For years he has struggled in school and with bullying.” – Arlene

“My daughter is now finishing her first month at college and away from home. So far, so good. Although she still needs help at times, she knows that it is ok to ask for help and what help she needs. This all started for Sophie at Walbridge. We will always be grateful for Walbridge. – Anne

“…Walbridge was truly the school that turned me around. It wasn’t just the classroom though that helped me build my confidence, it was also the kids. Everyone was so kind and respectful. For the first time in what seemed like my entire life, I made genuine connections with people my own age. I had never experienced that before.
Fast forward to the present and I am proud to say that I am a successful student. Edgewood has been kind in providing me with the education and flexible learning styles, but if it wasn’t for my experience at Walbridge, I really don’t know where I would be today. I learned the basic knowledge that I needed to pass each grade, but I learned much more than just that. I figured out who I am: a compassionate, caring, and intelligent human being. I just needed the tools to open up the doors to success.” -Avery

"Although I can see my Learning Disability still around in my life, I am nonetheless able to succeed in the communication trials that I face every day. It is very strange and exciting to realize that some of the automatic ways I currently talk and read were once tools that were taught to me at Walbridge.
I would not have said so at the time, but Walbridge helped me immensely. I still have very fond memories of my teachers and my friends at school. I reflect on them frequently. Walbridge gave me the space I needed to be a middle-schooler while also giving me the attention and education I required for my growth. It prepared me for high school, college, and the adult world 19 some years later!" -Tony
