Wild Harvest Nature Connection

Wild Harvest Nature Connection We offer intentionally mentored programmatic village space to connect with self, others and nature!

We offer programs for youth through adults that are one time sessions to multi-class series to ongoing mentoring relationships. Current offerings are listed on our website but a generalized list is:
Wild Saplings (drop off for 4-7 yr olds)
Wild Explorers (drop off for 7-11 year olds)
Wild Tenders (drop off for 12-18 year olds)
Trees and Saplings (kids and caregivers group)
Mentoring Through the Se

asons (adult group gathering each season)

Our programs involve intentional mentored time in the outdoors. The foundation of our mentoring is establishing safe and trusting relationships with each individual, and finding each person’s curiosities & passions. We let questions and curiosities guide our time on the landscape. We support each person to develop healthy relationships to the natural world through direct interaction and hands on learning experiences. This cultivates a strong sense of place and desire to be caretakers of our natural world (which includes humans). What this looks like depends on each person involved, the season, and the place. Our curriculum includes :
* Primitive skills and crafts: baskets, cordage, carving spoons, tanning animal hides, etc.
* Edible, Medicinal, Utilitarian plants: identification, ethics of harvesting, processing & storing
* Learning about local flora/fauna: through direct contact, using the senses, exploring field guides, etc.
* Playing Games: awareness games, improv, etc.
* Fireside time including learning to tend fire
* Celebration & Song
* Wild Tending: learning to tend wild natural places
* Permaculture
* Peacemaking & Tending to Relationships
and
* Core Routines of Nature Connection
which include : Sit Spot, Thanksgiving, Journaling, Mapping, Story of the Day, Expanding the Senses, Animal Forms, Animal Tracking, Wandering, Exploring Field Guides,
Survival Skills, Mind’s Eye Imagining, and
Bird Language. Please contact us for more information or to see if we can design a program to fit your needs.

We, Alex & Heather, Co-founders of Wild Harvest Nature Connection, are writing to announce our transition away from running WHNC. 10 years ago, we moved to Madison, WI with a vision to run nature connection programs to support people in connecting more deeply to themselves, each other, and the land....

Greetings Friend of Wild Harvest Nature Connection,

We hope you're doing well. 🙂

We're writing to you today to share the news of Tom Brown, Jr's passing on Friday morning Aug 16. You may or may not know that name Tom Brown, Jr but as a person connected with Wild Harvest Nature Connection we want to let you know this man has impacted Wild Harvest to the degree that this organization simply would not exist without Tom's work. Yes, we're influenced by others too but many are other students of Tom, and Tom's influence in the specific ways and work of WHNC is central and profound. As a child Tom was mentored into a profound connection with nature by a wandering Lipan Apache known as Grandfather Stalking Wolf who helped Tom develop his gifts as a tracker, teacher, scout and medicine holder. What Grandfather gathered he passed to Tom, and Tom has passed to 10's or even 100's of thousands. Co-Founders Alex and Heather were heavily influenced by Jon Young, Tom's first student, and his teachings of cultural repair and village building. Alex was directly influenced by going to visit Tom at Trackerschool over the past 20 years. Tom's passion was immense, his curiosity endless, his gaze piercing, his humor constant, and his love could be felt by all his students. Tom always said that he taught not for the students in the class, but for those they would teach, and he said as such we are all Grandfather's Grandchildren. If you wish to know more of Tom and Grandfather's story please read his books The Tracker, and Grandfather. The stories are epic; and through them you'll feel and know more of how far and deep the ways of WHNC are rooted.

We're so sad that Tom is gone, and so grateful for all the stories we've heard him tell. I, Alex, am so grateful for all the classes I've been able to go sit in with Tom. He always inspires. Always gets us sensing out beyond what I thought was possible. Always gave challenges and left a trail of breadcrumbs that left us wondering about what more was possible. And now he has passed on, leaving all of us to dig deeper to practice the skills, go to our sit spots, practice foxwalking until the practices themselves become the breadcrumbs leading our way forward toward deeper connection with ourselves, each other, and the Earth...

See you down the trail Tom, Thank you beyond words for all you've given!

With Heart,
Alex and Heather
