As we get ready to welcome back students NEXT WEEK, we’re looking back at some of the standout work our students made last year! 🎥 Nothing gets us ready for the return of Badger sports more than William Clarke’s CA465 mini-documentary, “What does it mean to be a Badger’s Sports Fan?”

“This project was open-ended to student interests, and I decided to isolate the experiences of the Badger fanbase,” Clarke said. “Through my role as a Creative Video Student with Wisconsin Athletics, I often get the experience to highlight the skills and achievements of our athletes, but not so much the people that make game days so special.”

Congratulations to CAPS member and longtime WCFTR supporter Stephen P. Jarchow, who recently earned his 8th Emmy Award nomination! 🏆

Mr. Jarchow and his company, Here TV, received the "Outstanding Daytime Special” Emmy nomination for the program, "Critics Choice 2nd Annual Celebration of LBGTQ+ Cinema & Television.” The winner will be announced at the Daytime Emmy awards show on October 30, 2026, at the Hollywood Paladium. Mr. Jarchow won in 2021 for “Girls Voices Now,” a documentary series about the challenges faced by young women of color in Los Angeles.

Our people have been working lately! 📝 Check out all these new publications and collabs from Comm Arts faculty and grad students:

From grad student Aubrey Sudebaker: “Networked Perversion: Fascism, Misogyny, and the Man versus Bear Meme" was published in the Quarterly Journal of Speech. The article takes a psychoanalytic approach to anti-feminist engagement of the viral "Man v. Bear" debate and offers a new way to think through the tangles of transgressive encounters that are organized around digital enjoyment. 🔗 Link on our website.

From grad student Jinyoung Choi and Professor Catalina Toma: “Chatbots and Loneliness: How Linguistic Dynamics in Conversations with Chatbots Shape Young Adults’ Loneliness” was published in Communication Research, one of the leading journals in our field. Their study theorizes and tests language-based mechanisms through which conversations with chatbots can shape users’ loneliness. ‍🔗 Link on our website.

From grad student Will Quade: “Know Your Enemy” was published in Film and History. This article analyzes anti-establishment Hollywood sports films and sports media spectaclization the 1970s.

And finally, from Professors Anirban Baishya, Darshana Mini, and Catalina Toma: “Streaming in the Time of the Plague: Covid-19, Prosthetic Sociality and Comfort TV” was published in Television & New Media as a rare three-area collab! This work originated from what observations during the pandemic. Things were being written in magazines and online outlets about what streaming platforms were doing and how users were watching content, but this group wanted to bring all of that together and investigate the phenomenon more deeply. In their conversations with Comm Arts students, they realized the pandemic brought in a sudden shift in the way users engaged with streaming platforms. ‍🔗 Link on our website.

We’re hiring 4-6 media assistants to staff the IMC front desks, facilitate equipment circulation for instructors and production classes, and maintain our robust media library. Positions are set to begin in August and September and start at $14 an hour!
