Mrs. Hartmann kicked off this lesson by chatting with her third graders about what reading can look and sound like in their classroom. She got everyone thinking by asking, 'How is reading powerful? How does it make us thinkers?' For their discussion, Mrs. Hartmann picked the awesome book "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst. Together, they talked about how everyone has tough days sometimes, but when we work as a team, we can help make things better! The students then imagined how they could rewrite Alexander’s day with questions like: What might a good day look like for him? Instead of a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, what if Alexander had a 'terrific, awesome, wonderful, very good day?'

Here is a fun and old-fashioned game Miss Voytek called "Huckle Buckle Beanstalk"! She used this as a warm up tool to let the students destress from the outside elements before embarking on some fun and challenging subjects. Fifth grade's bulletin board seems to be a manifestation! We're so happy and grateful that Fr. Ryan Lerner visited ESCA at 7:30 a.m. to share a special prayer and blessing with our amazing faculty and staff before our students arrived on the first day of school! Next, Fr. Ryan welcomed all the students in our gymnasium, said a short prayer, offered a special blessing, and greeted each student as they headed to their classrooms. We absolutely love starting each day with a prayer and The Pledge of Allegiance before beginning our classroom activities together! What a fabulous start to the new school year as we continue on our mission of preparing individual students to be our future leaders rooted in faith, service, and academic excellence.
