Prayers to the family & friends of Alice Mae Ellis Gray who passed away this week. May her memory be eternal.

Alice passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at home, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on July 27, 1942 in Coalburg, WV, she was the daughter of the late Griffith O’Dell and Myrtle Marie Ellis and the oldest of 8 children.

Alice will be remembered for her strong faith in Jesus and the love for her family. Her faith was the center of all she said and did and was evident in her relationships with all of those she encountered.

She was a beloved wife, mom, mimi and aunt. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, A.J. (Albert). Mom to three daughters; Angie (Chris), April (Erik) & Allison (Bill). Mimi to six grandchildren; Nick (Jennifer), Joey, Kenzie, Grace, Kacey & Anna, and four great grandchildren; Christian, Brooklyn, Camryn & Lily. She had 5 surviving siblings; Lewis (Rossa), Jane (PK), Risty (Brenda), Ronnie (Roger) and Danny (Rhonda), and was preceded in death by brothers Earl (Dorothy) and Dewayne and many nieces and nephews.
Go rest high on that mountain…

As you plan your Year-End-Giving donations for 2025, please consider donating to the "Scott High School Class of 1961 Scholarship Fund". The scholarships benefit graduating seniors and also benefit the school, so it does not matter which year you graduated in order to participate in this worthwhile award. The selection of the student(s) for this award is based on academic achievement, school activities, community involvement, and need. However, in order for this scholarship to continue annually, everyone is encouraged to contribute to the fund whether or not you are in the Class of 1961. Donations can be sent all year long, and we encourage you to send a check today to Jo Ann Mullins Harmon, 353 2nd Street, Madison, WV 25130. We thank you in advance for your generous support.

The SHS Class of 1961 scholarship committee chose two deserving 2025 Scott High School graduates, Skylor Maynor (on the left) and Shealyn Stone (on the right), to each receive a $1,000 scholarship to help with their college tuition. Thank you JoAnn for presenting the awards & thank you Janet for writing the bio below. Plus many thanks also to the rest of our scholarship committee.
Skylor was adopted by her grandparents, Harold and Minnie Maynor of Uneeda, when she was nine years old. They have provided a caring and loving home for her, as she writes in her personal essay. She is a member of the Scott High Honor Society and graduated with a 3.8 GPA. She has been accepted at Marshall University where she will be in the Visual Arts program. Skylor is a valuable member of the Madison Baptist Church where she volunteers with the youth and other activities within the church.
Shealyn was also raised by a grandparent. Her grandmother was her guardian until she passed away this past October just a month after she began her senior year. Despite her difficult situation, Shelyan graduated with a 4.3 GPA and has been accepted in the nursing program at Marshall University. After having a difficult life growing up, she explains in her essay that her desire and determination have helped her to accomplish what she has achieved.
God bless and guide both of these young women.
