πŸ•ŠοΈ FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS
Honoring the grace, devotion, and eternal legacy of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother of Thailand.

With profound respect and heartfelt remembrance,
Raak Thai Cultural Center, USA

08/16/2025

The Eight Styles of Thai Royal Dresses (Chut Thai Phra Ratcha Niyom) - were graciously introduced by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, during the reign of King Rama IX. They were created to be worn at royal ceremonies and state functions, and later became the modern standard of Thai traditional attire. These dresses not only reflect elegance but also embody the timeless cultural identity of Thailand.

1. Chut Thai Chakri β€’ Description: A one-shoulder dress with a long β€œpha nung” (traditional skirt) and a decorative β€œsabai” (shawl) often made of brocade or silk with gold threads. β€’ Occasions: Weddings, formal ceremonies, state functions.

2. Chut Thai Chakkraphat β€’ Description: Similar to the Chakri style but more elaborate, fully adorned with brocade silk and often accompanied by regal jewelry. β€’ Occasions: Royal ceremonies, highly formal and prestigious events.

3. Chut Thai Dusit β€’ Description: A modern-style blouse with a high collar and straight sleeves, worn with a brocade silk skirt. Often elegant yet less elaborate than Chakri or Chakkraphat. β€’ Occasions: Evening receptions, formal gatherings.

4. Chut Thai Amarin β€’ Description: A formal long-sleeved dress with Western influence, combined with traditional Thai silk and a decorative sash. β€’ Occasions: Daytime or evening ceremonies, diplomatic receptions.

5. Chut Thai Boromphiman β€’ Description: A high-neck, long-sleeved blouse made of brocade silk, paired with a matching long skirt. This style is modest and graceful. β€’ Occasions: Evening events, royal banquets, state receptions.

6. Chut Thai Siwalai β€’ Description: A long-sleeved blouse with a high neck, paired with a traditional silk skirt and worn with a shoulder sash. β€’ Occasions: Grand royal ceremonies, important religious or state events.

7. Chut Thai Chitlada β€’ Description: A long-sleeved blouse with a high collar, made of plain silk without intricate patterns. Considered semi-formal. β€’ Occasions: Daytime ceremonies, semi-formal royal functions.

8. Chut Thai Ruean Ton β€’ Description: A short-sleeved or sleeveless blouse with a round or small standing collar, worn with a plain silk skirt. This is the simplest style among the eight. β€’ Occasions: Informal ceremonies, cultural events, casual yet respectful occasions.

✨ Cultural SignificanceThe Eight Thai Royal Dresses are not merely clothing styles but cultural treasures. They embody the artistry, craftsmanship, and values passed down through generations of Thais. Each style carries its own story, purpose, and elegance, making Thai traditional attire more than just fabricβ€”it is a symbol of national pride and timeless heritage.
