Growing up we had an apple tree in our backyard, a Macintosh apple tree whose fruit fed a family of six. Every fall we waited for the ripe apples to gradually appear. The sun kissed the skin of the apples, and one particular apple just called your name! With a grab, a twist and a tug the apple was yours. One bite and the crisp, juicy texture reminded you that it was fall. Not a single apple lay below the tree on the ground for more than a day. It was important that we played “keep away” from the bees and garnish every apple, regardless of any bruise or wormhole, into a basket. From there we brought them to my mom in the kitchen. She harvested every single apple, from the ground or from the tree into some fall delicacy. But my favorite was homemade applesauce. The two ingredients of just apples and cinnamon made for the best tasting applesauce ever! I made it the same way for the last 35 years!
I pick apples every fall, particularly Macintosh to make my own homemade applesauce. Eating fresh apples from the orchard daily is a fall treat and a hidden treasure. Apples are a great boost for the immune system and are a great detoxifier for the liver and the gallbladder. Apples have anti-inflammatory properties and the pectin alone can help keep the digestive tract and the colon clean. Read more in Anthony Williams’ Medical Medium book, The Liver Rescue, about the benefits of eating apples every day.
Make it a family day and take a trip to your local orchard and pick your favorite apples. Create a few memories at home peeling, cooking and freezing your applesauce for the winter. Don’t forget to leave apples around for a quick snack. And yes, it just may be true that an apple a day will keep the doctor away!
