On this day in 1973 a propane tank caught fire in Kingman, AZ killing a railroad worker before exploding and killing 11 firefighters. While transferring propane to storage tanks, a leak was detected and caught fire. Ill prepared for a propane fire, the fire department tried to cool the tank, however the pressure reached its limit and exploded. It created a fireball 1,000' high and a shockwave felt 5 miles away. The train car landed 1/4 mile away.

This disaster led to the standardization of procedures in dealing with boiling liquid expanding v***r explosions (BLEVEs) in fire departments across the country.
