Meet UW-Madison’s Lonie Salkowski 06/23/2026

Meet Lonie Salkowski from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health whose interest in teaching, from medical students to colleagues, has developed into a research pursuit, specifically in curriculum development and the mechanisms by which students learn and assimilate concepts. Her first patent with WARF is an assessment program used to provide radiology residents an opportunity to independently interpret screening mammograms within a simulation setting.

"Lonie is improving how radiology students understand complex medical imaging and results with computer-based learning simulations. Her interactive AI tools set the next generation of radiologists up for success," says Jeanine Burmania, WARF senior director of IP and licensing.

Meet UW-Madison’s Amish Raval 06/16/2026

Meet Amish Raval from the UW-Madison Department of Medicine in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health who evaluates novel cardiovascular regenerative medicine therapies. His team uses stem cells, gene transfer agents and extracellular matrices to develop improved biologic delivery methods and durable treatments for patients with advanced heart disease.

The group is currently developing innovative treatments that utilize stem cells and unique biomaterials that can be delivered minimally invasively using catheters to patients with advanced ischemic and structural heart disease. The laboratory has expertise in therapeutic cell characterization, transcatheter delivery and interventional imaging, cardiac biomaterials, small/large animal cardiovascular disease models, federal regulatory requirements for biologics therapies and the design and ex*****on of Phase I, II and III clinical trials.

"Dr. Raval is an innovative and important researcher in his field. His contributions have already advanced the state of cardiovascular repair and treatment and his inventions are nearing first-in-human clinical trials," says Andy DeTienne, WARF director of licensing.

UW-Madison’s entrepreneurship course draws students from diverse fields 06/10/2026

For more than 25 years, the Wisconsin Applied Ventures Entrepreneurship (WAVE) course offered at the Wisconsin School of Business has welcomed students of any background in any field of study looking to pursue their own business.

Faraz Choudhury, CEO of Immuto Scientific, chose to take the course instead of pursuing a traditional MBA — and has no regrets.

"Dan Olszewski did a phenomenal job in putting the coursework together in a way that's very practical and useful without trying to pack too many things in there," Choudhury said. "Everything that we learned has been very useful in my real-life experience in running a business."
