When agencies can share information safely and effectively, young people with disabilities are more likely to receive coordinated services and support as they prepare for life after high school.

Join us on September 17 for “Leveraging the Power of Data to Improve Outcomes for Transitioning Youth,” presented by Maryland LINK.

Presenters will share a secure data-sharing prototype designed to improve referrals, service planning, and communication among education, vocational rehabilitation, developmental disabilities, workforce, and other youth service systems. They’ll also discuss privacy requirements and considerations for adapting this approach in other states and communities.

⚖️ AI can provide information, identify patterns, and suggest possible next steps—but it cannot replace the knowledge and judgment of a vocational rehabilitation counselor.

Part 2 of our series looks at the counselor’s role in an AI-supported environment. It explores:

• Understanding how AI tools work
• Protecting client information
• Watching for bias or inaccurate recommendations
• Explaining AI clearly to clients
• Knowing when to question an AI-generated suggestion
• Keeping people and their goals at the center of every decision

AI may change the tools counselors use, but empathy, advocacy, cultural understanding, and human connection remain irreplaceable.

🤖 How can AI support the daily work of vocational rehabilitation counselors?

From organizing case notes and reducing administrative work to identifying concerns before they threaten someone’s employment, AI offers promising possibilities. But its role is not to replace counselor expertise—it is to give counselors timely information and more time to focus on people.

Part 1 of our two-part series explores how AI may help VR counselors:

• Manage demanding caseloads
• Recognize changing needs earlier
• Personalize services and supports
• Strengthen long-term employment outcomes

❓️ Workplace questions don't always come up during a scheduled appointment.

That's one reason we're testing Anchor, an AI-powered check-in tool designed to support people with disabilities after they start working.

⚓️ Anchor can check in weekly, help participants think through workplace concerns, and encourage conversations with their job retention specialist. It's available evenings and weekends when a counselor may not be.

Because successful employment isn't just about getting hired—it's about having support when you need it.

🤳 A Quick Check-In Can Make a Big Difference

🚧 Sometimes workplace challenges start small. A schedule change. A misunderstanding with a supervisor. Increased stress. Questions about accommodations.

⚓️ Anchor is an AI-powered check-in tool that reaches out weekly by text or a simple app to ask how work is going. It helps participants track patterns over time and alerts a job retention specialist when additional support may be needed.

🤝 The goal isn't to replace human support. It's to help people stay connected and get help before small concerns become bigger barriers to employment.

What if support didn't end when someone started a new job?

🗨️ We are exploring how technology can help people stay connected to support after employment begins. Anchor is an AI-powered check-in tool that works alongside trained job retention specialists to identify challenges early, support problem-solving, and help participants stay on track in their jobs.

💪 Anchor isn't a replacement for human support—it's a way to strengthen it.

AI is starting to show up in vocational rehabilitation services, but one thing hasn't changed: people come first.

As agencies explore how AI can support job retention, case management, and service delivery, VR counselors play a critical role in ensuring these tools are used ethically, responsibly, and in ways that support—not replace—professional judgment.

In Part 2 of our AI and VR series, we explore:
✅ Ethical considerations for AI use in VR
✅ Why counselor judgment must remain the final decision-maker
✅ New skills VR professionals may need as AI tools become more common
✅ How counselors can help shape the future of AI in disability employment services

Technology may evolve, but empathy, trust, advocacy, and human connection remain at the heart of effective vocational rehabilitation.
