By now, we already know that AI can generate the visible parts of an instructional designer’s work very quickly:

The outline.The objectives.The storyboard.The quiz.The first draft of the script.

Then it stops and the hard questions are still in front of us.

❓Is the problem actually caused by a lack of skill?
❓What would meaningful practice look like in this workplace?
❓Which constraints are missing from the brief?
❓What does the stakeholder need to hear, not merely want to hear?
❓What evidence would show that performance changed?

You learn to answer these questions by investigating real problems, observing work, making defensible decisions and testing what happens afterward.

As an instructional designer, you shouldn't just show the polished deliverable.
Show:

✔️ the request you received
✔️the problem you uncovered
✔️the alternatives you considered
✔️the decision you made
✔️the evidence you collected

You open your favourite AI tool, type "build me a course on onboarding," and hit enter. What comes back looks finished. Objectives up top, four content screens, a drag and drop activity, a ten question quiz. Then it goes to a stakeholder and it falls apart.

Instructional design starts with a performance problem but you gave it a topic.

So copy this and fill in the brackets:

"Act as an instructional designer.

Performance problem: right now [audience] does [current behavior]. They need to do [target behavior] instead. I know this because [evidence].

Learners: [role, prior knowledge, seat time I actually have, delivery method].

Constraints: [SME availability, authoring tool, deadline].

Before you propose anything, ask me up to five clarifying questions about the performance problem, the learners, and how success gets measured on the job.

After I answer, write terminal and enabling objectives only, with measurable verbs at the [Bloom's] level I've named. Stop there. I'll ask for the outline separately.

One more thing. If a job aid or a process fix would solve this better than a course, tell me."

Check the activity against the objective. Say your objective is that the learner can run a performance review, and AI gives you a quiz about performance reviews. The quiz shows they read it. It doesn't show they can do it. Sort that out at the objectives stage, because fixing it once you have built the whole thing costs you days.

And read every draft like an editor. These tools drop steps without telling you. They'll write "branching scenario" over something that's really a multiple choice question with two obvious wrong answers.

Your value as an instructional designer was never going to come from typing prompts into Claude or ChatGPT.

Strong instructional designers don’t start with prompts. They start with the problem:

❓What performance gap are we trying to solve?
❓What does the learner need to do differently?
❓What practice will actually change behavior?
❓What should be automated, and what still needs human judgment?

That focus on strategy is what separates true instructional design from quick content creation.

AI is a great assistant for speeding up drafts, outlining ideas, and organizing notes. But it can’t handle learner analysis or make high-impact design decisions for you.

If you want to stand out in today's market, focus on using AI to sharpen your strategic thinking.

When most people decide to move into instructional design, their first instinct is to open YouTube and search “how to use Articulate Storyline.”

Or worse, look up university Master's programs and start stressing over tuition costs.

I get it, software and credentials feel tangible. They feel like the "safe" thing to start with.

But software tools doesn't really help if you don't know what to build or why you're building it.

Real confidence in this field comes from knowing how to take a pile of information and turn it into something that helps someone learn.

Once you get that core strategy down, the software part stops feeling scary. It just becomes the tool you use to bring your ideas to life.
