One of the traps I see many new and aspiring instructional designers fall into?
Thinking that great learning is about beautiful slides and information overloading. ❌

As one of my favorite authors, Julie Dirksen puts it: “The basic DNA of good learning experiences is trying to do something and getting feedback.”

If you want to transition into ID and instantly stand out to hiring managers, you have to stop designing for information retention and start designing for behavior change.

When building your next project, ask yourself these 3 questions:

👉What is the learner actually doing? (It's not enough if they are just clicking Next)
👉Where are they allowed to make a mistake? (Real learning happens in the friction of failure).
👉How does the system respond? (Feedback should coach them and not just tell them "Incorrect").

Your next instructional design role may include teaching people to use AI, designing AI-supported learning or managing AI-assisted content production.

Your portfolio can demonstrate the skills. Choose one direction and build a relevant sample:

👉AI enablement: Create a short workshop that teaches a sales team to use AI to prepare for customer meetings. Include an exercise and guidance on checking the output.

👉AI education: Create a short course explaining an AI topic, such as how to recognise inaccurate AI responses. Include practice questions.

👉AI learning workflows: Show how you use AI to draft learning materials, then review and correct them. Include your instructions, review checklist and an example before and after your corrections.

Some employers use new titles. Other employers add AI responsibilities to established learning design roles.

Honestly, the best way to learn is by building as you go:

🟢Pick one specific task a learner needs to practice.
🟢Build a simple activity around it.
🟢Test it, tweak it, and document why you made those choices.

An AI role-play may sound like a real conversation. But does it give learners the right kind of practice?

As an instructional designer, you need to plan more than just the opening prompt.

You also need to test what happens when learners give a strong response, a weak response, or something completely unexpected.

Then give them another attempt. A second try helps you see whether they can apply the feedback.

An AI role-play could also make a strong portfolio project. Your case study can show how you defined the problem, designed the conversation, tested different responses, and improved the experience.

Before integrating AI into a learning activity, ask yourself this 👉🏻 What skill do learners need to practice?

If AI does the core thinking, learners might finish the activity without gaining the ability to do the work on their own.

To protect the learning process, design activities that require learners to:

👉🏻Try the task before AI provides an answer.
👉🏻Review their own work before AI improves it.
👉🏻Complete a new task without AI suggestions.

Learners must own the thinking they’ll need on the job.

Building your ID portfolio? A course is probably the first project you have been told to create.

Courses can show your writing, visual design and authoring skills. But it doesn't demonstrate your ability to study a performance problem and choose the right response.

Try building a performance support tool instead.

Your project could be a decision guide, troubleshooting checklist, searchable job aid or short AI assistant. The tool should help someone complete a real task at the moment help is needed.

The finished screen is only one part of the case study. Show the problem you found, why you did not choose a course, how you tested your idea and what you changed afterwards.

A policy document may contain internal information. A learner file may contain personal details. A client presentation may include material that you can view but cannot upload somewhere else.

You do not need to memorise every privacy, security and copyright rule, however you do need to know when to check the company’s policy and ask the person responsible.

Use these seven questions before your next AI-assisted project.
