Mercer on Mission Korea

Mercer on Mission Korea Striving to make a difference in the lives of North Korean refugee students living in South Korea.

Mercer on Mission Korea is focused on teaching 1st through 6th grade students at the Drim School, located 60 miles south of Seoul, South Korea. It is the first special education foundation for North Korean refugees and their children. More than 200 students have been enrolled since 2003 with around 65 high school graduates and 46 graduates who then went on to college or university. In South Korea today, the ability to speak English, even at a rudimentary level, is crucial to an individual’s economic viability. English speaking competency will provide more opportunities for them to achieve higher scores on their college entrance exams and to obtain employment. Contemporary South Korean culture is also highly technological, and education in basic robotics and computer skills will be greatly beneficial for them and may open opportunities for them to have STEM-oriented careers. In addition, our interactions will hopefully allow these refugees, who were brainwashed from an early age to adopt an inaccurate view of the Western world, to experience and learn Western culture through direct contact. Interacting with a group of westerners will open doors of cultural experience that they need to prosper in a culture that has adopted many western ways.

There’s still an opportunity to join Mercer On Mission Korea 2020! This year’s program will include teaching English, 3D printing, and app development. For more information, contact Dr.Hyun ([email protected]) today!

Thanks to innovative work by Mercer faculty and students, visually-impaired high school graduates in Middle Georgia and South Korea have received Touch3D Yearbooks. Since 2018, Dr. Sinjae Hyun and Dr. Scott Schultz with the School of Engineering and a team of their students have created custom yearbooks featuring 3D-printed face models for the Georgia Academy for the Blind in Macon. They put together seven yearbooks for members of the Class of 2018, 11 for the Class of 2019 and are making 17 for the Class of 2020.

They are continually improving their product and process and have evolved from a wooden display board to a display case and from 3D printing all of the face models to casting them using silicone molds.

During the Mercer On Mission trip to South Korea in summer 2019, Mercer faculty and students taught students at the Drim School how to make the 3D models. The Mercer team created five 3D family portraits for a rehabilitation center in South Korea in fall 2019 and delivered them in December 2019. The Drim School students created 3D yearbooks for seven graduates at a school for the blind in January 2020.The Mercer On Mission team plans to return to South Korea in December 2020 to teach 3D scanning, modeling and printing technologies to teachers at schools for the blind.

Great news for all who're still interested in Mercer On Mission Korea 2020!! We've changed the dates of our program this year from summer (due to travel restrictions in place) to winter. Tentative travel dates will be December 12 - 24, 2020 with training being offered in Fall semester.
