For we are Knights and the age of chivalry is not dead." -Walter James Sears The men of the Eta Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity would like to welcome you to our webpage and invite you to our Fall '12 Rush here at Mercer University. Sigma Nu was founded by James Frank Hopkins, James McIlvaine Riley, and Judge Greenfield Quarles in Lexington, VA. These three men began a movement to completely abolish

the hazing system at VMI and their efforts culminated on a moonlit October night in 1868. Following Bible study at the Superintendent's home, the three met at a limestone outcropping on the edge of the VMI parade ground. Hopkins, Quarles and Riley clasped hands on the Bible and gave their solemn pledge to form a new society of brotherhood they called the Legion of Honor. They publicly announced it's existence January 1, 1869 and the Legion of Honor has since been known as Sigma Nu Fraternity. Sigma Nu is an international fraternity spanning the United States and Canada with over 180 active chapters and over 160,000 living alumni. Eta chapter has initiated 1,500 brothers since our founding in 1884, and have more alumni than any other fraternity on campus. We were founded nearly 140 years ago, living our three core ideals of Love, Honor and Truth. Brothers from Sigma Nu have helped shape and change many aspects of our country today and are found in prominent leadership positions in the fields of business, entertainment, military, athletics, and government just to name a few. The friendships and memories we form here last a lifetime. Fraternity, for us, is all about supporting one another, and working together to build a powerful collegiate experience. Furthermore, Sigma Nu is not just four years, it’s for life. We hope to see you during recruitment and will be glad to answer any questions you may have regarding the fraternity or rush in general.
