The Senior Class of 2026 at the Georgia Academy for the Blind was honored to receive personalized 3D Yearbooks sponsored by Beverly Knight Olson and created through the engineering program at Mercer University. Through the vision of Dr. Sinjae Hyun and the engineering talent and dedication of Scott Shultz, Michael Marcoux, and Maya Alisus Jacob, these students now have a meaningful keepsake that allows them to experience and remember themselves and their classmates in a truly unique and accessible way. This incredible project is more than just a yearbook; it is a reflection of innovation, inclusion, and the power of collaboration. We are deeply thankful for the continued support, creativity, and heart poured into this work each year. Opportunities like this remind our students that accessibility matters and that they are seen, valued, and celebrated. Thank you for continuing to create experiences that leave a lasting impact far beyond graduation day.🎓💙 Mercer University Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital

Matt Forrest is not only the head of Georgia College & State University’s Art Department; he’s a friend to GAB. For over a decade he has been coming and doing projects with our art students. This month he helped students in Mrs. Applebee’s art class, screen print vintage bird images. Students then sprinkled plastic dust on the wet ink and melted it with a heat gun to make the image tactile. We used watercolor pastels and colored pencils to bring life to the art. Thanks, Professor Forrest!🫶

Celebrating Excellence: Ms. Chance Moorman Named State Schools District Teacher of the Year!🎉🎉
We are thrilled to share some exciting news with our Georgia Academy for the Blind (GAB) families and community—Ms. Chance Moorman has been named the State Schools District Teacher of the Year!
In just three short years at GAB, Ms. Moorman has made a lasting impact. As a teacher of Math, Science, and Social Studies, she brings energy, creativity, and a deep commitment to her students each day. She also serves as the Middle School lead teacher for her professional learning community and has been recognized with the Serving Students with Disabilities Trailblazer Award. Simply put, she is an invaluable part of the GAB family and a teacher our students truly love and respect.
Ms. Moorman will now represent GAB, the Georgia School for the Deaf (GSD), and the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD) as she advances to the Georgia Teacher of the Year (GTOTY) competition. This is an exciting journey that begins at the school level and moves through district competition before advancing to the state stage. Finalists participate in essays, interviews, and speeches, with the selected Teacher of the Year serving as a statewide ambassador for public education, working with leaders, speaking at events, and even meeting the president.
GAB has a strong tradition of excellence in this process. Mrs. Melanie Thompson and Mrs. Kristen Applebee were both named finalists for Georgia Teacher of the Year. Additionally, Lauren Eckman-Andrews served as the 2013 Georgia Teacher of the Year. Notably, she is the only teacher of the blind and visually impaired from any state to earn this prestigious honor.
We are so proud to see Ms. Moorman continue this legacy. Please join us in congratulating her and cheering her on as she represents GAB on the state stage. Her passion, dedication, and heart for students make her truly deserving of this recognition.💙🤍🖤

Way to go, Ms. Moorman!

Some of our graduating seniors spent the weekend in Pigeon Forge for an unforgettable trip in the mountains. They enjoyed the resort’s water park and arcade, explored and interacted with birds at Parrot Mountain and Gardens, and experienced hands-on science fun at WonderWorks Pigeon Forge. They also used their ECC skills to enjoy dinner and a show at Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show and laughed their way down an alpine coaster. It was a weekend full of growth, fun, and memories that will last a lifetime💙🎓
