Join Stratford Academy alumna and Dance Arts Studio instructor, Mary Priestly McLendon for Creative Movement and Dance for Beginners and Pre-K

Creative Movement Dance
Beginners-Pre K

This class fosters creativity through imaginary based adventures while introducing basic ballet positions, steps and vocabulary. Students develop gross motor skills, control, and coordination and develop a greater sense of confidence and self-esteem within an environment that encourages expressiveness and joy of movement. They also enhance their listening, cooperation and social skills in a nurturing environment. This year culminates in a "recital" in the Tift Auditorium in May.

Girls must have their hair pulled back in a ponytail or bun, leotard or comfortable top, exercise pants or tights, and ballet shoes. Leotards or leotards with built in skirts and tights are encouraged, but not required. Please remember to pack your child's dance attire and hair accessories on dance days. Boys wear a t-shirt and exercise or dance pants, black ballet slippers or jazz shoes.

The chess team and running club were back in action yesterday.
The lower school chess team is working hard to get ready for this years GISA tournament. Last year they brought home the 1st place individual trophy and 2nd place team trophy for the state of Georgia!

Golf Squad at Stratford Academy is for both new and continuing students and provides weekly opportunities for your child to learn the technical swing mechanics (i.e. putting, chipping and full swing, etc.) as well as the social skills required to enjoy golf, the clubs, and golf course (i.e. vocabulary, etiquette, rules, history, etc.) all under the instruction of an LPGA or PGA Professional. Golf is a very challenging and fun sport that can lead to college scholarships. So start early and start now...boys and girls! Even if your child already plays, it is great to enjoy weekly, convenient lessons from the pro.

Golf Squad Primers
Pre K

Golf Squad Primers are phonics based golf enrichment programs for preschool students offered during your school’s Fall/Spring Semester. It is a six after school club that meets once a week for thirty minutes with a golf industry professional. The coloring handbooks review simple math skills and basic golf terminology. Each week a new golf vocabulary word is introduced using a letter from the alphabet. All participating families receive weekly emails detailing what students will be doing and learning in class. All essentials are provided during class (Golf Squad Handbook, training equipment, fitted golf clubs, etc.). Each student receives a Golf Squad Primer Handbook and Golf Squad visor to keep. Simply register, show up and build the foundation to enjoy golf for a lifetime.

AFTERSCHOOL EAGLE EXPLORATIONS
“Discovering Your Gifts”


Afternoon Eagle Explorations is a convenient opportunity for your child to experience activities over and beyond what our regular curriculum covers. Our goal is for your child to discover their gifts and interests.

Some classes will have limitations, so classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. If a class is cancelled, you will be notified via email. Your instructor will contact you with a makeup date. Please check the calendar carefully as class dates, times, and locations ALL vary. Check the specific class descriptions for pick up information. All classes will have a ten minute pick up window. Any student not picked up within ten minutes of dismissal will be transported to ASAP. If your child is to attend ASAP after an exploration, you MUST send a note, call the lower school workroom or email the instructor to avoid the $25 late pickup fee. ASAP will still be available Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 6:00 at a price of $6.50 per hour. You will not be refunded for any missed classes, unless cancelled by the instructor. You will not be refunded for cancelling a class after it has begun.

IMPORTANT - BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
Students will be given one behavior warning. Parents will be contacted if a warning is issued. After the first warning, students will be dismissed from the Exploration. If a child is dismissed from an exploration due to behavior, you will not be refunded.
By signing up for an exploration, you agree to the following guidelines.
Participation in Stratford Academy after school programs follows the behavior and discipline policies outlined in the Stratford Handbook. Repeated violations or inappropriate behavior may result in suspension from the program.

Monday Classes
Chess
Kindergarten- 5th Grade

All experience levels welcome! Students will all receive a chess tshirt and a chesskid membership for the duration of the semester. This will allow them to track their success and improve their skills. Students can also play each other from home! This semester the chess students will visit places in our community to teach chess to seniors and students from other schools. All students participating in chess club will be eligible to attend the GISA tournament in the spring.

Creative Crafting
1st-5th Grade

Jump-start your child’s creativity with arts and craft projects. We will complete a variety of paper, recycled material, and paint projects like: stained glass with glue, slime, maracas, macaroni mosaic art, no-zipper pencil bag, and more. All materials will be provided. All activities will be new from what we did before.

Lower School Running Club
1st-5th Grade

The Running Club is a great way to get kids moving and to develop a love for running. Offered twice during the fall season, this six-week club will teach kids running warm-ups, stretches, strength exercises, and sportsmanship in a games-based approach. Team members will ideally log 1-1.5 miles each practice and be encouraged to track their running mileage outside of practice time. The cost includes a club t-shirt.

Join us for a STEAM live­‐action team­‐based game where players cooperatively discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms in order to progress and accomplish a specific goal in a limited amount of time.

Circuit Scribe
K-5th Grade

Let your creativity merge with science as you build exciting circuits using our Circuit Scribe conductive ink pen, sweet magnetic modules, and plain old printer paper. By placing the paper over a steel sheet, included in your kit, your paper becomes the base for blinking lights, beeping buzzers, and whirling motors. A World of Dance
4th -6th Grade

Be ready to move in this active journey as we learn dances from around the world and beyond. This class includes basic dance technique and dance vocabulary of countries and regions such as Africa, India, Spain, the Middle East and dances of your own imagination that we create together. This class will perform outside of school in senior centers and other opportunities that may arise. A $50-costume fee will be added that will be used for the performances. This fee will be charged to your account. You will be notified before you are charged. There will be one Sunday rehearsal included, day TBD. The last class, Dec. 17 will be a performance at a Senior Center.

Modern Dance and Choreography
5th - 8th Grade

This performance based class is open to all 5th - 8th Grade students who have an interest in dance and choreography. Each class includes dance technique exercises that will increase total body muscular strength and flexibility, and improvisation exercises that will be used to create their own choreography. The dance technique exercises used in this class are based on the Limon, Hawkins and Horton styles of Modern Dance. This class will perform outside of school in senior centers and other opportunities that may arise. Prior dance experience is recommended but not required. All students will be encouraged to grow as dancers from whatever skill level they are at. A $50-costume fee will be added that will be used for the performances. This fee will be charged to your account. You will be notified before you are charged. There will be one Sunday rehearsal included, day TBD. The last class, Dec. 17, will be a performance at a Senior Center.

Rube Goldberg Competition Team (Fall and Spring)
Ages 8-11 by June 15, 2020
LIMIT OF 10 STUDENTS

Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist best known for his crazy contraptions designed to complete a seemingly simple task using a variety of sequential steps. This class gives students the opportunity to follow in his footsteps by participating in a Rube Goldberg style competition. This year students have been tasked with using their wildest imaginations to create a machine to turn off a light. The students will be competing in the online portion of the contest. They will design and build the machine at Stratford, and a video will be submitted for judging in April. The cost will cover the class materials, registration fee, and a gift from the competition organization.

Creative Dance

Learn how to express yourself with the Language of Dance while having fun and getting some exercise,too! If your child loves to move, has a vivid imagination, and enjoys music, Creative Dance is the perfect choice. This class will include basic dance technique, but will focus on exercises, games and activities that encourage you to create your own dance vocabulary. The last class will be a Parent Observation Day on Dec. 18.

Get rid of stress as you gain strength and flexibility with this fun, cardio-vascular dance workout! You help pick some of the songs that will be used to create non-stop dance routines that are easy to follow. Classes end with a cool down, Yoga style stretching sequence designed to help relax and revitalize you. will focus on exercises, games and activities that encourage you to create your own dance vocabulary.
The last class will be a Parent Observation Day on Dec. 12.

Junior Tinker

This class may join on Dec. 17, with the World Dance Class to perform at a Senior Center, and other performance opportunities.
