The WIU School of Music is saddened to report the passing of Dennis L. Johnson, Director of Bands from 1981-1985.

WIU Bands: 1981-1985

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of ABA Member Dennis L. Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Music at Murray State University, who died on May 23, 2026, at the age of 80 in Murray, Kentucky.

Born on February 17, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dennis earned a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Michigan in 1968 and a Master of Music from Michigan State University in 1981. He began his teaching career in 1968 as a band director in Michigan public schools before serving on the faculties of the Interlochen Arts Academy and Western Illinois University, where he taught from 1981 to 1985. He was appointed Director of Bands and Orchestras at Murray State University in 1985, a position he held with distinction for 33 years until his retirement in 2018.

Inducted into the American Bandmasters Association in 2002, Dennis remained a valued member of ABA throughout his distinguished career. Internationally respected as a conductor, educator, clinician, and advocate for wind band music, he served as Secretary of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) from 1993 to 2003 and as President from 2003 to 2005, continuing his service to the organization thereafter as Past President. He also commissioned nine new works for wind band, further contributing to the growth and advancement of the repertoire.

During his tenure at Murray State University, Dennis taught undergraduate and graduate conducting and conducted the Chamber Winds, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, University Symphony Orchestra, and pit orchestras for operas and musicals. Under his leadership, the Murray State University Wind Ensemble earned national and international acclaim through performances at Carnegie Hall, appearances at College Band Directors National Association conventions, and participation in the International Wind Band Conference in Manchester, England. In the spring of 2011, the Murray State Symphony Orchestra performed in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall in conjunction with a Kentucky Educational Television/PBS documentary documenting the event.

Dennis’ influence extended far beyond Kentucky through an extraordinary career of guest conducting, teaching, and adjudicating throughout the United States and abroad. He conducted honor bands, orchestras, and professional ensembles and presented clinics in Argentina, Austria, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, and throughout the United States. In 2013, he served on the jury for the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, and in 2017 presented conducting clinics at the WASBE Conference in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Dennis also served as clinician and music director for numerous World Projects festivals, including events in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Sydney, Honolulu, and at venues such as Disney Hall and Carnegie Hall. His work with international ensembles included guest conducting appearances with the Sydney Youth Wind Orchestra, the Air Self-Defense Force Band of Japan, and the Australian Youth Honors Wind Band in Brisbane. In December 2014, he conducted the Sydney Youth Wind Orchestra during the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.

In addition to his international conducting and teaching activities, Dennis served as Kentucky State Chair for the College Band Directors National Association and as state collegiate representative for the Kentucky Music Educators Association. His many professional accomplishments earned recognition in Marquis Who’s Who and the Cambridge Dictionary of International Biography.

Dennis devoted his life to music education and the advancement of the wind band profession. His artistry, leadership, mentorship, and generosity of spirit influenced generations of students, colleagues, and musicians around the world, and his legacy will continue to resonate throughout the band community for years to come.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Reney (“Randy”) Johnson, a daughter, a son, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Murray State University Band Department to support commissioned works in memory of Dennis L. Johnson. Donations may be mailed to 200 Heritage Hall, Murray, KY 42071. Checks should be made payable to the “MSU Foundation” with “MSU Band Dept. in memory of Dennis L. Johnson” noted in the memo line. Contributions may also be made to the St. John’s Episcopal Church Memorial Garden, 1620 Main Street, Murray, KY 42071.
