Western Illinois University’s School of Computing, Data, and Mathematical Sciences is proud to partner with HL7 International’s inaugural Break the Code program, giving WIU students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the technologies shaping the future of healthcare.

HL7 International, a leading standard‑setting organization for electronic health records and healthcare data exchange, offers this free, year-long program. Students will learn to build real FHIR applications, work with healthcare APIs and data standards, explore the responsible use of AI in healthcare, and work toward earning public HL7 credentials. No prior coding or FHIR experience is needed.

Congratulations to Dr. Dinesh Ekanayake, a mathematics professor in Western Illinois University’s School of Computing, Data, and Mathematical Sciences, on his contribution as a coauthor of a new study that brings mathematics and medicine together.

Research involving Dr. Dinesh Ekanayake has been published in the Journal of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, highlighting a promising new approach for managing endometriosis in rhesus macaques. The study evaluated degarelix (currently used to treat advanced prostate cancer in humans) and found that it effectively suppressed reproductive hormones, reduced uterine size, improved clinical signs, and produced no major treatment‑related adverse effects. Importantly, the work demonstrates the potential of this treatment to enhance animal welfare while also strengthening the translational value of rhesus macaques for understanding and treating endometriosis in humans. This interdisciplinary collaboration brings together researchers from Yale School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Harvard Medical School, Cornell University, and Western Illinois University.
