πΊπΈπ WIU-CEC students at the Special Education Leadership Summit! π
This year's Capitol Hill experience was especially memorable. While CEC participants typically meet with education policy staff in House and Senate offices, our students had the rare opportunity to meet directly with Senator Dick Durbin in his Capitol office to thank him for his longstanding support of special education and discuss issues that matter to students, families, and educators. The day also included exploring the U.S. Capitol, celebrating advocacy with fellow CEC members from across the country, and making connections with leaders from around the nation.
π A huge thank you to Dr. Hollie Mason for leading and mentoring this outstanding group of future special educators. Experiences like these empower our students to become knowledgeable advocates, confident leaders, and dedicated professionals who will make a lasting difference in the lives of children and families.
We're so proud of the entire WIU CEC team for representing the School of Education and Western Illinois University with excellence. Keep up the amazing work! ππ

π Alumna Spotlight: Dr. Ruth Owusu-Ansah ππ
Congratulations to Dr. Ruth Owusu-Ansah, a 2025 Western Illinois University doctoral alumna in the Organizational Justice, Equity, and Inclusion (OJEI) program and a special education teacher at Bushnell-Prairie City High School, on representing Illinois at the 2026 Rural Schools Collaborative Rural Education Summit in Madison, Wisconsin!
Selected as one of just 10 educators to serve on the RSC Teacher Panel and one of four featured presenters, Dr. Owusu-Ansah shared the impact of her innovative Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship through Math project. Through a student-run mini store, high school special education students gain hands-on experience applying mathematics while developing financial literacy, career readiness, and entrepreneurial skills.
Dr. Owusu-Ansah's work is a powerful example of how innovative teaching can transform learning and strengthen rural communities. We are proud to see our alumni making a national impact and representing WIU with excellence. ππ
