The Michigan Reading Association invites you to submit proposals for our upcoming 2027 conference, themed “The Art of Literacy.” The 71st annual conference will take place in Downtown Grand Rapids, March 12-14, 2027. MRA Board members are committed to continuous professional learning to stay current on literacy research, priorities, and evidence-based practices across Michigan.
The literacy institute in partnership through MAISA GELN and MDE, deepened participants’ knowledge of critical literacy development aligned with Michigan’s literacy priorities under Public Act 146, including the science of reading and evidence-based practices. Researchers and presenters included Dr. Laura Tortorelli, Dr. Julia Lindsey, and Dr. Adrea Trunkenmiller, who shared current research and practical applications for literacy instruction. The learning also reinforced the powerful role literacy coaches play in strengthening instruction and increasing student achievement.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to a day filled with learning, inspiration, and a renewed commitment to fostering a love of reading. Throughout the day, participants explored the DIA for Educators, learned strategies for weaving illustrated texts into daily instruction, examined mentor texts, discovered the power of graphic novels and visual thinking strategies, and reflected on ways to strengthen classroom libraries and literacy experiences for all students. We look forward to continuing this work together and are already excited for the 2027 Michigan Reading Association Conference!
