Mesa County Catch-A-Calf Program Do I get to chase my calf in an arena and put a halter on him?

• No.

Catch-a-calf Program Rules and Information

The catch-a-calf program is designed to help young, aspiring cattlemen and cattlewomen get started with a practical beef management program. To be eligible:

• You must be at least 8 years of age by December 31.
• You must be an active, eligible 4-H or FFA member in Mesa County.
• This must be your first market beef project.
• Every applicant will be int

erviewed prior to acceptance into the program. If I choose to do the catch-a-calf program what do I get?

• You will get, free of charge, one marketable beef calf.
• You will get 100% of the proceeds when you sell your steer at the Mesa County Junior Livestock Auction in July of the following year. Colorado 4-H rules prohibit this activity.
• Calves will be chosen in the most fair and safest way possible for everyone involved. What do I have to do to complete the catch-a-calf program in order to maintain my “4-H member in good standing” status?

• You have to raise, show and sell the calf at the Mesa County Fair the following July.
• You have to maintain a record book and complete all mandatory classes according to TRA 4-H rules.
• You have to agree to monthly farm inspections by the beef program superintendents to ensure the animal is in a good environment and receiving proper feeding and care.
• You have to send a monthly letter to your producer.
• You must send a written “Thank you” to your sponsor and you MUST thank your buyer at the end of the show season.
• You must agree to go through mandatory training that covers feeding and proper management techniques, as well as halter breaking and showing. When and how will I show my catch-a-calf?:

• You can show your calf at as many venues as you see fit throughout the show season.
• You MUST SHOW and SELL your calf at the Mesa County Fair.
• In addition to competing in a special catch-a-calf class with the other catch-a-calf exhibitors, you will compete with all the other market beef animals at the Mesa County Fair. What do I need to provide for my catch-a-calf project?:

• You must provide all feed and care from the point that you take possession of the calf. o Please understand that calves being fed for market, or show must be fed a complete ration that includes both a grain mix and good grass hay at a rate of approx. 3% of the animal’s body weight/day. If this protocol is not followed there is a possibility the animal will be deemed non-saleable by a private sifter at the final beef weigh-in in July.
• You must provide a clean, healthy environment for your calf to live. What happens if I don’t comply with all of the above rules?

• Your calf will be removed from your possession and you will no longer be eligible to participate in the catch-a-calf program.
• You will be responsible for all expenses incurred up to the point of removal. It is our hope that by gaining the financial help and education through this program that you will choose to continue participating in the beef projects that 4-H and FFA have to offer for years to come.
