Dear VBHS Classmates,
I look forward to seeing you on Jun 6, 2026, 5-8 pm at the Wyndham Surf Club 5700 Atlantic Ave. We have a good response from our Class of 1966 classmates and from others who attended or graduated from VBHS. We welcome all who attended Virginia Beach High School who would like to join us. We will have a sign in table just past the bar in the Surf Club. We will also have a memorabilia table, if you have memories from our high school days please bring to share. We also have pictures from the Class of 1966 reunions. Cappy Meredith has done a fantastic job of capturing those memories. Interesting that none of us has changed a bit.
If you would like to attend and have not let me know please RSVP at the above email or text at 757-478-9553. The club wants to ensure they have sufficient staff to serve everyone.
This is a no host social, everyone can order and pay for whatever they desire. The club will have a limited food menu just for us so that we will receive priority treatment if we want to order food.

We will miss those who are unable to attend. Can't wait to see everyone on Jun 6, 2026.

While working on our upcoming reunion, I found this tribute to one of our own. Freddie Grosskreutz. Our class of '66 had some amazing people. Freddie passed in 2018.

Just two weeks after Joe Twombly died another Brevard County legend and East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame member, Freddie Grosskreutz, has left our tribe. He was 69 years old.

Born in Newark, NJ, in 1948 before moving to Virginia Beach, VA, where he grew up, Freddie began surfing in the early 1960s. A quick study, his talent soon caught the attention of some of the top surfboard manufacturers of the day, including Hobie Alter and Dewey Weber, who put him on their East Coast teams. By the late ‘60s, Grosskreutz was morphing into one of the coast’s better competitors when he caught the travel bug. Mexico and Puerto Rico were among his favorite haunts before he visited Hawaii in 1969, where he surfed all around Oahu and Kauai, eventually moving into a shack above Velzyland on the North Shore. Freddie typically avoided the revolving door of surf stars and their photographer entourages by surfing the user-friendly lefthander just west of V-Land, east of Sunset Point. He surfed there so frequently, often alone or with friends like Phil Irons and Ricky Hendrickson, that the spot was eventually named after him, “Freddieland” or “Freddie’s.” The spot is still called that to this day.

Freddie ultimately left Hawaii and settled in Indialantic, FL, where he was hired by Sam Gornto to laminate Happiness Surfboards at the same shop Pat O’Hare, Bill Eberwein, Bob Freeman, and Claude Codgen had worked out of. Fred also moonlighted for John Parton at Fox Surfboards in West Palm Beach, Lewis Graves at Ocean Avenue in Melbourne Beach and Dick Catri in Indialantic before settling into a permanent role as a laminator for Jim and Ed Leisure of Quiet Flight Surfboards. All that time, Freddie kept ripping; in fact, he was still riding a 5’5” fish well into his sixties.

In August 2010, however, Grosskreutz began feeling fatigued and was rapidly losing weight when his daughter Tamsin ordered a series of tests and procedures for him. After visiting a gastrointestinal specialist, the resulting diagnosis was bleak — advanced carcinoid liver cancer — two masses in his liver and two in his small intestine. Freddie underwent a series of surgeries while local fundraisers helped offset the rising medical costs for the uninsured patient. Meanwhile, the cancer secreted a hormone that caused him wooziness, diarrhea, dizzy spells, fatigue, flushing and muscle loss. Eventually the symptoms got so severe that he was no longer able to surf.

Grosskreutz fought hard, never wavered in his faith, but sadly, passed away last week. He leaves behind his faithful wife of 33 years, Susan Grosskreutz, his son, Morgan Grosskreutz, and his daughter, Tamsin Ella. Surfline sends our most heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.

Dear VBHS class of 1966 classmates,
It is hard to believe it has been 60 years since we graduated high school. We are planning a social/reunion event at the Surf Club, Wyndham (former Mariner) 5700 Atlantic Ave, June 6, 2026 from 5-8. The Surf Club will provide an area for us with tables, music and separate checks. There are rooms available at the Wyndham for those who may come from out of town. We have not reserved rooms but there should be availability, especially now. Price is about $200 per night.

Please let me know if you plan to attend our 60th reunion event. Although this is a no host social (everyone pays for their own food and drink) the club would like to know approximate number of people attending.

Other Virginia Beach High School classes have asked to be included in our event. Members from other classes who would like to join are more than welcome. Event will be posted on page but it you know of others classes who may be interested please let them know about out plans.

I hope that everyone will be able to join is as we celebrate 60 years. I look forward to seeing as many of you who are able to attend. Rip McGinnis, Cappy Meredith are I are currently planning this event. If anyone wants to assist with the planning please let us know.

Pamela Fuller Obituary

Santa Paula - On March 9th my lovely wife Pamela Fuller made her transition into the next adventure on her path. She was and will always be a person of passion, kindness, and love. Pamela was a human being's human, and she believed in service everyday. Her legacy is goodness, and we were lucky to have her in our lives, leaving an overwhelming hole. We now rejoice in the time that we were fortunate enough to have this remarkable spirit, and are experiencing the absence of this beautiful soul who was our rock.

Pamela was born April 25th 1949 in Evanston Illinois to Dorothy "Dodie" Wilder Fuller, and Charles "Bud" Fuller, and was their youngest of four children. She was truly a character whom excelled in horse back riding, state champion spring board diver, musician, and multi talent in many creative efforts. She thrived on spiritual growth, empowering and educating others, creating, embracing, and nurturing both her family relationships, and those with her many friends! She had several occupations through her many wonderful years including teaching, restauranteur, massage therapist, Reiki practitioner, was an early participant in tech, and even produced a feature film. She leaves behind her three siblings Amy, David, and John, her loving sons Aaron, and Byron, the daughter she never had Eve, and of course her best friend and husband Chip. She loved her numerous nieces and nephews, and adored her three grandchildren Julien, Xavier, and Alex. Pamela sang choir and attended service at Ventura Center for Spiritual Living, was a proud member of various fellowships, and leaves friend circles in Virginia, North Carolina, California, and you'd be hard pressed not to find a connection of her's in all of the 50 states. It is an understatement to proclaim she left her mark from Virginia Beach, to Norfolk, to Outer Banks, to Ventura, and Santa Paula. Her three cats Romeo, Sasha, and Gabby have lost their human North Star, and we all feel a bit like lost kittens without her earthly presence. She truly quested for knowledge on any subject, loved culture, loved speaking in accents, preparing and enjoying delicious flavors of the world, live music, film, and her favorite pastime laughter. Just remember in times of sadness when thinking of PWF, just search in the sky for a bird of prey, as she so loved them, and she loved you.

Below is the obituary for our beloved classmate, Trudy Williams. I remember Trudy as beautiful, friendly, talented and very intelligent. Another one of us has "left the building" but will never be forgotten. Thank you, Chicken, for letting me know of Trudy's passing.
Trudy Ann Williams Transtrum OBITUARY
Trudy Ann Transtrum passed away peacefully on Oct. 16, 2024. Born in Richmond, VA on July 22, 1948, she grew up in Virginia Beach where she graduated from Virginia Beach High School. She then graduated from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina. She definitely was a fan of the Seahawks and the Gamecocks.
After college, Trudy moved to Alexandria, Virginia. She worked for several years on Capitol Hill before being employed at the U.S. Department of Energy as Communications Coordinator for the Office of Oil and Natural Gas. She retired with a Distinguished Service Award.
Trudy loved her life in Northern Virginia. She especially enjoyed antiquing, taking cooking classes, attending concerts, and dining with friends.
Trudy is predeceased by her parents Dr. and Mrs. Fred M. Williams, lifelong residents of Virginia Beach. Left to cherish her memory are her sister Marsha Williams Wilder and her husband Dr. Charles Wilder, her niece Tracey Ellen Wilder; and her nephews James Davidson Wilder and Dr. Frederick Wilder and his wife Laura Hofford Wilder.
The family would like to thank the staff at Maimonides Healthcare (formerly Beth Shalom) and Westminster Canterbury Hospice for their compassionate care.
There will be a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA or the American Parkinson Disease Association. Online condolences and memories can be made to the family at hdoliver.com.
