Learn tid bits about town structures, families, schools, and more. Who was the first grocer? Who planted apples on Apple Valley Road? As editor, I felt it was our responsibility to not only commemorate
the 10th anniversary, but to gather all the information about it
in one place for posterity. ==== Several of the articles are from ORAL HISTORY reports. This includes artist Larry Cohan (9/14), Habitat for Humanity home owner Amanda Anderson (9/21), Linda Hubbard 4 yr journey, incl. living in an RV for 2 yr (9/21)-- Gerald Boland's wife (he died in the flood) --- and 2 flood "symbols/art" in town (9/14) --- and "Lost & Found" items, of 3 people (9/21) -- and about 10 personal short statements by people describing who their "flood hero" was and why (9/7) ----

ANN RIPLEY -- We had a well-know "garden" mystery book writer in our midst! -- We are sad to say that local Ann Ripley has passed away in April 2023, at the age of 96. She lived on Apple Valley Road, and loved to do her gardening (a Master Gardener) and to have her friends/group over to do painting. She was known across the US for her 'garden mystery' book series. ---
She and her husband Tony (deceased, married 49 years) retired to the outskirts of Lyons in 1993. At the time, Ann had just sold her first book manuscript. The next 14 years saw the publication of a total of 10 books in her Louise Eldridge garden mystery series. The plots combined her interests in gardening and politics, with titles such as Death of a Garden Pest and Death of a Political Plant.===== She was a member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, Colorado Authors League, and Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. Ann received awards for education reporting as well as a Colorado Authors League Top Hand Award for best book-length genre fiction in 1995 for Mulch: A Gardening Mystery. Aside from her fiction writing, Ann contributed as a freelance writer and editor for several newspapers over many decades.====

Shelly's Cottages has been around for decades. It now has a new owner, and the Lyons Chamber of Commerce had their April Social Networking meeting there. So, the weekly Lyons Recorder has done an article about the Henri and Pat Kinson who owned it for many years , and were very popular in town. TWO NEW LIFE STORIES were donated to the Lyons Redstone Museum in 2022: (1) Colard Family, researched by Jerry Tabor, and (2) "For the Love of Family, The Story of Angus Alan and Faye Stapley Morris" researched by Colleen Morris Divine. === The Colard family owned property NW of Lyons, and today the road up there is named after them. Arthur homestead in 1918 the Spring Gulch land. The Lyons History Video Project also interview his son Don Colard, who passed away at the age of 99 just a couple of years ago. He had moved to a house in downtown Lyons; and he was well-known and beloved by residents. == Angus Morris moved to Lyons in 1970; and his kids were known around town for their athletic abilities at school. Both he and Faye passed away about 20 years ago.

THE STONE CUP. -- this coffee house was often called the FRONT PORCH of Lyons because of the number of locals who regularly met there... whether coming alone, or with friends. == They closed their doors Labor Day weekend 2022. The co-owner Mindy Tallent has written a great simple article telling the history of the place, and how it grew and diversified over the years.

BLACK BEAR INN & it's 4-star "story" == Chef Hans Wyppler, and his 'hotel management trained' wife Annalise turned the Black Bear Inn into a place that people came from miles around to eat at -- over a 35 year period, people celebrated many special moments in their life... from wedding receptions, to anniversaries, to "girls night out." All were treated like royalty. The Wypplers came from a Swiss German background, and brought years of restaurant expertise to the small town of Lyons. In the 1980s, they more than doubled the size of the building and its staff.
