Today we were talking about different types of fish. One of the children pointed to the to fish tank and asked, "why are those fish always together?" I replied, "some fish swim in groups or in schools. Then one student raised her hand and asked, "well, where is the teacher?"

Once you're signed in, click on "Ralphs Rewards" or "Food 4 Less Rewards," then Community Contributions. Shop for Groceries and Make a Difference in a Child's Life
LAUP is pleased to announce a partnership with Ralphs and Food 4 Less supermarkets, which have made us one of the grocery chains' official charities. This means the public will now be able to directly support LAUP through the supermarket chains' Community Contributions program, by simply shopping for groceries.

LAUP Receives Statewide Award For Innovation, World-Class Service and Performance Excellence
LAUP was recognized by The California Council for Excellence (CCE), which administers the California Awards for Performance Excellence (CAPE), during an awards ceremony held in Newport Beach. This is the second time LAUP has received the CAPE award, the first time being in 2008.

The LAUP Parent Ambassador Program provides parents with the opportunity to speak up for the needs of their children and their community. Through this program, Parent Ambassadors receive the training, tools and materials they need to advocate for their child and on behalf of all children who do not have access to a high-quality preschool program.

The hour-long seminar ended with the students asking Dr. Ayala how they can help the preschool movement. Dr. Ayala asked them to read "The Heckman Equation," an economic case for investing in early childhood development by Professor James Heckman, Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics. "If you understand Heckman's equation (invest + develop + sustain = gain), you will advocate for preschool locally, at the state level and nationally," Dr. Ayala said.

The Los Angeles Business Journal recently published an Op-Ed co-authored by Celia C. Ayala, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of LAUP, and Bob Zukis, a partner with PwC U.S. and member of LAUP's Corporate Council. It speaks about how pre-K needs to be included in the education debate, which currently mainly focuses on the k-12 system. It also discusses how the business community can help ensure a more educated workforce by getting children started early in the classroom.
