GUINEA-BISSAU PUSHES FOR STRONGER MEDIA ALLIANCE WITH THE GAMBIA DURING BANJUL VISIT

Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Social Communication, Dr. Abdurahamane Turé, has urged West African states to deepen media cooperation, warning that fragmented communication systems are weakening journalism’s ability to fight misinformation and defend democracy.

He was speaking in Banjul during a press briefing hosted by the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services as part of an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral media relations between Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia.

Dr. Turé said the rapid rise of digital platforms, instant news cycles, and online misinformation has placed traditional media under pressure, forcing urgent reforms in how information is produced and shared.

“We are called upon to rethink the role of media institutions and adapt them to the demands of our time,” he said.

He stressed that media institutions must remain central to credible information, civic education, and cultural promotion, warning that weak media systems risk undermining democracy, peace, and national unity across the region.

The minister also called for stronger investment in public media institutions, improved working conditions for journalists, and expanded professional training, noting that ethical journalism is essential for rebuilding public trust.

However, he emphasized that no country can face the current media challenges alone, arguing that regional cooperation is now a necessity rather than an option.

Dr. Turé used the visit to push for joint programming between national broadcasters, exchange of training opportunities, and shared production of educational and cultural content between both countries.

He also highlighted plans to expand collaboration into digital communication, innovation, and modernization of traditional media systems.

As part of the visit, Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering capacity building, content exchange, and institutional cooperation between their media sectors.

Dr. Turé said the agreement should not remain symbolic, but must translate into “visible results” that improve media quality and public service delivery.

He further warned that West African integration cannot succeed without stronger communication bridges, adding that media must be used to promote unity, tolerance, and a shared regional identity.

Closing his remarks, he urged journalists to uphold ethics and truth in the face of rising disinformation, describing the media as a frontline institution in protecting democracy.

The visit is expected to lay the groundwork for deeper long-term cooperation between the two countries’ media institutions.

MEDINA UNITED CROWNED GFF DIVISION ONE CHAMPIONS IN HISTORIC MAIDEN SEASON

Medina United FC have been crowned champions of the 2025/26 GFF Male Division One League after a dramatic final day that delivered late goals, shifting pressure and a tense title finish.

The newcomers sealed the title with a narrow 1-0 victory over Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) at the SK East Mini Stadium, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Adama Kanteh in the 90+2 minute.

The goal sparked jubilant celebrations as Medina United completed a remarkable debut campaign by winning the top-flight league in their maiden season.

The title race went down to the wire, with Fortune FC also keeping pressure on until the final whistle. They defeated Steve Biko FC 1-0 at the Box Bar Stadium, courtesy of an 85th-minute penalty converted by Salifu Colley.

However, Fortune’s victory was not enough to deny Medina United, who held their nerve to secure the win and clinch the championship.

The final day produced high tension across both venues, with the title swinging on fine margins before Medina eventually emerged as champions of Gambian football’s second tier.
Medina United’s triumph marks one of the most impressive debut-season achievements in recent GFF history, underlining their rapid rise in the domestic game.

In the final standings, Medina United finished as champions, Fortune FC secured second place, while Gambia Ports Authority settled for third.

At the end-of-season awards, Medina United received a prize of D1 million for winning the league. Fortune FC earned D500,000 as runners-up, while GPA FC collected D250,000 for finishing third.

The result brings the Division One campaign to a dramatic close, with Medina United writing their name into Gambian football history after a season defined by consistency, resilience and late drama.

GFF LAUNCHES DECENTRALIZED DIGITAL CAPACITY-BUILDING PROGRAM FOR REGIONAL FOOTBALL ASSOCIATIONS

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) is launching a comprehensive, multi-phase capacity-building workshop aimed at decentralizing football communication and granting the country’s seven Regional Football Associations (RFAs) complete digital independence.

The intensive training program is designed to equip regional communication representatives with the practical, modern skills required to establish their own self-sustaining media presence, reducing reliance on the central Federation and turning local associations into the primary source of truth for their respective regions.

The milestone project is being rolled out in two strategic phases to ensure full, dedicated coverage:

Phase One: Beginning at the National Technical Training Centre (NTTC) in Yundum on Wednesday, 24th June 2026, it will bring together Communications Officers from the Banjul, Kanifing, and West Coast RFAs, alongside the GFF’s central Communications Assistants.

Phase Two: Scheduled to take place in Soma in the coming weeks, this phase will bring together the communications representatives from the four provincial regions.

The aim of this program is to ensure that institutional strengthening reaches the grassroots. The ultimate goal of the training is absolute empowerment. It will help the RFAs to own their digital space, no longer having to wait for the national federation's channels to publish their scores, league standings, or talent highlights.

It will help them to dominate their own narratives to drive fan engagement and independently attract local sponsorship.

To achieve this, the GFF is directly supporting the regions in creating and aligning over 35 new official digital channels across Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. This collective expansion will guarantee 100% national digital coverage for Gambian football.

The hands-on workshop concentrates heavily on practical, on-the-ground ex*****on across four core pillars:

Professional Field Reporting & Interviewing: Unearthing and telling the human-interest stories of regional football.

Mobile Photography, Videography, & Graphics: Packaging high-quality visual match-day content using accessible mobile tools.

Social Media Management & Fan Engagement: Building interactive online communities to increase match attendance and local excitement.

Crisis Communication & Brand Guidelines: Protecting the integrity, reputation, and unified voice of the football ecosystem.

By lifting the professional standards of regional media operations, the GFF is bridging the gap between national successes and grassroots realities—ensuring that every rising talent in every corner of The Gambia has a visible platform to be seen by the world.

The opening ceremony, to be presided over by the President of the GFF, Lamin Kabba Bajo, will be on Wednesday at 10am.
