A new home construction can take up to 9 to 12 months. Whereas you can buy a home in Seattle for $804,000 (median sale price as of September 2023) in 1.5 to 2 months. So, buying a turnkey home is not just cheaper but also faster. Or you can hire a GC to do the job, it might not only save your time, but also your money, because they are building it in a more professional way.

The construction sector is poised to invest heavily in new smart technologies to address a string of issues that arose during the pandemic.

According to a recent report from Research Dive, the construction industry is expected to invest heavily in AI startups and the adoption of cloud-based technologies. The report predicts $8 billion in revenue from the sector until 2031, with most revenue coming in the final five years. JLL’s Artificial Intelligence: Real Estate Revolution or Evolution? report also shows that investment into AI-powered PropTech tools is already seeing significant investment—about $4 billion in 2022—driving the development of real estate applications using AI.
Most problems are ripe for solving using current and emerging technologies firmly in the project management realm, with less direct applications to the physical act of construction. Nevertheless, technologies range from augmented realities that can significantly increase efficiency in terms of costs, labor, management time, and resources at job sites to robotics that help alleviate physical stress on the laborers.

The speed of change would mark a shift for a sector with a history of being slow to adopt new technologies, in part because it doesn’t face the same demand for speed and quick turnaround as, say, the stock market, says Andrew Volz, JLL Project and Development Services Americas research lead.

“AI technology has the potential to shift how we work in construction dramatically,” Volz says. “These tools heighten accuracy and give time back by changing the need for project managers, specialists and inspectors to be frequently on site.”

This is the trend and we have to follow it!

Federal spending to build and repair U.S. infrastructure is expected to increase by over $550 billion. Government contractors, especially those specializing in heavy civil construction, could receive substantial amounts of economic stimulus if they effectively prepare and have the right talent at the ready. I regularly hear from architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) businesses about how the labor shortage is making staffing projects incredibly challenging.

According to the 2023 Construction Hiring and Business Outlook from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and Sage, respondents are most optimistic about infrastructure categories. The study showed "positive readings of 42% for both highway and bridge construction and transportation projects such as transit, rail, and airports."

As reported by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), the value of state and local contract awards increased 25% in 2022; I can only hope 2023 will continue to see this type of growth. But that brings us to the pressing question on everyone's mind: Does our firm have the right staff to bid on and perform the work?

On Jun 8, we had a guest speaker, an experienced Project Manager John Jessum in our class. He used to work for many famous construction companies like Fairbank Construction. He started from explaining what a PM is, and shared with us many valuable experiences like "Never sign a lump-sum contract". He also taught us to think out of the box to solve the problem. It was an interesting and thought-provoking speech and discussion.
