Thank you to The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation for supporting us. We are able to create opportunities for children and adults to learn about the rich African Culture through lecture demonstrations, drumming and dancing.!👏👏👏We are committed to teaching authentic West African Rhythms and Dance!!! Kuumba Dance Ensemble, Inc.
The VCA honors Black History Month through one of our Teaching Artist Roster partners! Check out the quote below from Sheron White Simpson, founder of Kuumba Dance Ensemble, on how they celebrate Black History daily through performances, workshops, and lecture demonstrations.
“Lynchburg’s own Kuumba Dance Ensemble Incorporated (KDEI) has engaging performances, workshops, lecture demonstrations and programming throughout the city, community and throughout the State of Virginia. KDEI consistently educates children, civic organizations, churches, and diverse communities about the rich culture of Africa and the Diaspora. We intentionally celebrate Black History daily, engaging our constituents in cultural demonstration/performances, and have received feedback about the immediate impact made to participants.
KDEI collaborates with Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) and is a proud member of the Teaching Artist Roster. With the VCA partnership we are providing more access to the arts in various communities. We aim to empower future generations by teaching them about heritage and their potential. It is our hope that by teaching them to understand one’s heritage, it empowers them to make better choices and progress in life.”

This weekend November 16-19 -2024, was Epic!!!! Mickey Caesar from Guinea West Africa trained Dancers and drummers from Charlottesville and Lynchburg Va.
We attend a number of African dance conferences each year and we are putting it out there to bring Mickey Caesar to kaloum Greensboro and others. She lives in New Orleans now and she is their “ Best kept secret.” But when I was there in September on vacation, I took two classes from her and was absolutely convinced that we needed her to train us!!!!!! She is an instructor like none other. She teacher advanced, intermediate level, as well as those interested in learning the culture! Mickey is a technician and gives the foundational structure so that we can dance at high levels due to her coaching and training nature. Her specialty is ALL things Guinea dancing and Duns. She is truly keeping the culture alive by equipping us with music( songs) translations skills and a genuine love for all people👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
