Over Spring break 2026, ten of our SMHS students traveled to rural Panama to participate as volunteers on a medical mission trip with Floating Doctors (https://floatingdoctors.com). Our students began the week with fast-paced orientations, learning more about the Ngäbe-Buglé community and the mission of Floating Doctors. They then jumped into action, collaborating with doctors from various countries to provide medical care in a flexible and culturally sensitive manner. Students cared for both emergent and routine concerns, including through home visits for patients too ill to come to the clinic. Participation and service on this trip provided an expansion of understanding for global health through a lens of cultural competence and humility.
