URGENT PLEA FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Dear Valued Member of the AOH,

AOH Division 17 recently received troubling news from the Long Beach City Council that they will not permit the Festival portion of this year's St. Brendan the Navigator Irish Heritage Day Parade & Festival. This event is vital for promoting Irish Heritage, Honoring worthy members of our communities, and raising the funds necessary to accomplish our Mission of supporting those in need.

For those who have not seen our initial response to the City Council’s blindsiding Facebook post on 8/26, you can read it on our website. Parade & Festival - AOH Division 17 Long Beach NY (aohlongbeachdiv17.org)

Dear Councilman/Councilwoman {Name}:

As a supporter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 17, I am extremely disappointed with the Council’s proposed decision to cancel this year’s St. Brendan the Navigator Irish Heritage Day Festival. Sighting COVID-19 as the primary concern and impetus for your decision is a clear double standard, as similar events, promoted and sponsored by the Council, are being permitted to take place.

I ask that you reconsider your decision and permit this tradition to continue. Further allowing our community to return to normalcy.

Respectfully,
{Name}

AMERICAN TROOPS IN NEED OF SUPPLIES

Everyone following the developments of the last few weeks is aware that the situation on the ground in Kabul has been chaotic.

United States Air Force Security Forces personnel from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst are currently on the ground providing security for the evacuation effort but are running low on basic supplies.

If you want to help out, you can make a donation directly to the 87th SFS Key Spouse, who will use those funds to collect items such as bottled water, energy drinks, protein bars, and toiletries to be sent directly to U.S. forces on the ground in Kabul.

To make a donation, scan the QR code attached in this image or look up @SarahPlatt16 on Venmo.

I can personally vouch for Sarah and guarantee that 100% of donations will be used in the effort to keep our servicemembers fueled while they are in harms way attempting to complete the Afghanistan evacuation.

Thank you!

Brothers,
During good times we enjoy social events, during pandemic we supported others less fortunate than ourselves.
As Hibernians we have shown time and time again that we are there for one another when in need.

This is what being a Hibernian means, living our motto, of Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity.

I hope that Hurricane "Henri" continues to pass us with limited impact.
However, in case anyone runs into challenges, please report back to me.
As in the past we will see what we can do to provide assistance.
Forward this message & stay safe.

Yours in our motto.

The Archbishop of Dublin has said that Catholicism has all but ‘vanished’ in Ireland.

He said that a combination of an aging clergy and a serious decline in the number of people attending mass has put the church in crisis.

Archbishop Dermot Farrell has called for major changes to be implemented within the church.

He said: “The challenges facing me are pretty clear. We have an aging clergy and very few vocations to the diocesan priesthood or religious life.

“There is a major decline in the number of people who actively practice their faith. Faith needs ritual embodiment.

“One must see in people how faith is lived. Today the visibility of faith has for all intents and purposes vanished.”

Archbishop Farrell said priests and parishioners need to get creative bring the institutional church into the 21st century.

He said: “Bishops and priests need to encourage a participatory institutional model of Church with a leadership of service, central to which is the people of God who comprise 99.99% of the Church’s members.

“When this is grasped, all else changes.”

[07/19/21]   Looks like a few folks are ready to party. The responses from the Ladies and Men of Division 14 has been outstanding and it looks like a lot of folks are ready to party. Thank you to those who have sent in 50/50 raffles and attendance money including Chris McNulty,Debra Hewhook,
Carol and Ted McTigue , Joe Gavin , Bernadette Conway, Maryanne Santini, Louise Salina, Nick Cafiero, Greg Rinn, Nora Donahue, Mike Lavin, Maureen and Stephanie Leahym Mark Daley, Bill Sullivan, Ellen O'Neill, Deena Maroney.

Other highlgihts:
- Tim Myles, Joe Gavin and Kevin Kennedy have been selling the 50/50 raffles like crazy,
- the Dingnam/Kearney Clan and the Cafiero Clan are bringing a whole bunch of guests to the party
- A bunch of people have been getting gift certificates to local establishments; people are making up baskets, donating items for baskets, just a whirlwind of support for the day. Very exciting.

If you haven't cleared your calendar to be free on Sunday to come down to Greis Park for a fun afternoon of food, drink, music, games, then get on it.
Maureen and I will be at the VFW on Thursday, probably between 6:30pm and 8:00pm in case you want to drop off any other items for raffle baskets. We will have quite the line-up of items to raffle off. The 50/50 raffles returned are already 50% more than we usually receive before the picnic. Very cool.

Thanks,
Maureen Graham Tom Piderit

[06/26/21]   AOH Brothers/Sisters,
Welcome to Issue 1 of this year's Picnic Pulse, your weekly reminder to ramp up the excitement for the Division's annual picnic on July 25th. I know I'm already excited to go to the mailbox every morning to see who has sent back 50/50 returns and registered to attend the picnic. Thanks to those who have already sent their envelopes back - the Lavins, Kevin Grasing, Kathleen Barry, the Santini's, Gregg Rinn, Art Moloney, Jane Husser, the George and Colleen Kelly as well as Kevin and Gail Kelly, Bill O'Hara, Bill Burke, Tim Gatins, Kevin Loughnane, Ed Dougan - that is awesome for just the first week of returns. We are going to have a terrific picnic.
A few additional items to keep in mind over the coming week:
1. Let me know if you plan to attend the picnic and how many you expect to bring; it really helps with the planning
2. If you come across anything that you would like to donate for the raffle baskets we will be making up for the picnic, put it aside and let me know and we'll arrange a hand-off.
3. Spread the word; let others know about this fun event smack in the middle of summer that costs practically nothing and is a great opportunity to share a few hours with your Hibernian Brothers and sisters. Did I mention we will have games for the children as well?

Well done Division 14; we are off to a great start, thank you.

Tom Piderit
Picnic Chair

[06/17/21]   You may hear the following conversation around town in the coming days:

" Now that NY State has lifted many of the restrictions from the Pandemic, what can we do over the summer to return to normal? Wait, I know...how about planning to attend AOH/LAOH Division 14's annual picnic on Sunday, July 25th? Yeah, that's it."

If you do hear this conversation, be sure to remind those folks that the picnic will be held, as always, in Greis Park from 12 noon to 6 pm on July 25th and we will have lots of food, drink, music and games to help get back to normal.

Look out for the mailing coming your way and please let us know how many family and friends plan to attend so we can be ready for you.
See you soon,
Tom Piderit
Picnic Chair

[06/11/21]   Brother Hibernians,

Our next meeting will again be a hybrid one. This Thursday, June 17, we will meet in person at the VFW on Merrick Rd, Lynbrook, and also by Zoom. With the vaccine readily available and the COVID numbers going down, hopefully more members will feel comfortable attending. We need members’ input and ideas to help keep the Division going in the right direction. At this meeting, we plan to nominate and vote on our next Man of the Year, who will be honored at our July Picnic.
On Sunday, June 6, the AOH Nassau County Board had their bi-annual Convention and election. The elected officers are as follows: Jack O'Brien: President, Ken Ferguson: VP, John Nolan: Financial Sec’y, Sean Hood: Treasurer, Tom Scanlon: Marshall, Paul Doud: Standing Cte., Joe McDonald: Recording Secretary, and Sean McClenin: Sentinel. Thank you to our brothers who were able to attend the Convention and elections. Thanks also to the brothers who participated in Lynbrook’s Memorial Day Parade.
In case you are looking for a new book for summer reading, I might suggest: “Iron Women: The Ladies Who Helped Build the Railroads”. It is the story of those women, mostly Irish, who contributed to the rise of the railroads in this country.
Hope to see you at the next meeting. Thanks.
