Teachers, as you start to plan field trips for this school year, consider including Cedar Crest's Environmental Education program in your schedule!

We offer both day and overnight trips that can be customized to your class's curriculum. With educational classes like Creek Ecology, Gardening Together, and Journals to Justice, and team-building and recreational experiences like high ropes and zip line, a field trip at Cedar Crest can be worked into almost any science unit you cover in class.

Introducing Phil Salter, our Environmental Education Director!

Phil is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and Drew University Theological School. He has over a decade of camping and education experience with children and youth and loves the joy and surprise of learning with folks of all ages. At this very moment, Phil might be thinking about how his daughter, Annie, makes him smile and laugh, when the next season of The Traitors drops so he can watch it with his wife, Sarah, how to find more time to skateboard, which book to dive into next, when to plant something, and what the ocean might feel and sound like if he were near one.

“Where life is precious, life is precious.” - Ruth Wilson Gilmore

These are the first words that campers see when traveling along the Ecojustice Trail this summer. This trail travels around Cedar Crest’s lake and offers participants a chance to read and respond to quotes and prompts and discuss their thoughts together along the way.

This week, almost as if on cue, a camper spots a watersnake in a tree alongside the trail shortly after reading Ruth’s words. After marveling at this encounter, a prompt paired with Ruth’s quote invited these campers to use their senses to take in their surroundings. And then it asked, “What if we live as if the life teeming around us is precious?”

To imagine and then to share with each other is precious. It’s when we begin to feel possibility together.

What’s growing in the garden this summer?

Familiar favorites - tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, beans, eggplant, okra, tomatillos, leafy greens (lettuces, chard), root veggies (radishes, carrots, beets, potatoes), walking onions, and flowers

First time additions - rutabaga, Thai peppers, asparagus

Spent the morning with campers exploring the garden and gathering a small harvest to take along with them for cookout this week. Yummy summer menus.

Happy pollinator week! When we think about how a garden can be shared, it can be liberating to remember how it must be shared with more-than-human life, too. It doesn’t thrive in isolation, and we can’t garden by ourselves. It’s the kind of place to be humbly and happily reminded that we are always outnumbered and always in relationship.

We’re celebrating:

✅avoiding pesticides
✅sharing about your pollinator relationships
