The extreme heat may make us want to stay inside with the air-conditioning on high, but some plants actually flourish in high temperatures. Our marigolds, string beans, okra, and hot peppers are thriving in the mid-August weather.

“Where life is precious, life is precious.” - Ruth Wilson Gilmore

These are the first words that campers see when traveling along the Ecojustice Trail this summer. This trail travels around Cedar Crest’s lake and offers participants a chance to read and respond to quotes and prompts and discuss their thoughts together along the way.

This week, almost as if on cue, a camper spots a watersnake in a tree alongside the trail shortly after reading Ruth’s words. After marveling at this encounter, a prompt paired with Ruth’s quote invited these campers to use their senses to take in their surroundings. And then it asked, “What if we live as if the life teeming around us is precious?”

To imagine and then to share with each other is precious. It’s when we begin to feel possibility together.

What’s growing in the garden this summer?

Familiar favorites - tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, beans, eggplant, okra, tomatillos, leafy greens (lettuces, chard), root veggies (radishes, carrots, beets, potatoes), walking onions, and flowers

First time additions - rutabaga, Thai peppers, asparagus

Spent the morning with campers exploring the garden and gathering a small harvest to take along with them for cookout this week. Yummy summer menus.

Happy pollinator week! When we think about how a garden can be shared, it can be liberating to remember how it must be shared with more-than-human life, too. It doesn’t thrive in isolation, and we can’t garden by ourselves. It’s the kind of place to be humbly and happily reminded that we are always outnumbered and always in relationship.

We’re celebrating:
✅pollinator-friendly plants
✅pollinator nesting sites
✅avoiding pesticides
✅sharing about your pollinator relationships

Even though the summer solstice is still a few days away, summer camp is in full swing at Cedar Crest. Campers have been able to spend time in the garden as they use their senses to explore what lives in compost and what grows in the garden, practice seeding and planting, and learn how to figure out when something is ready to be harvested. These gardeners have tried peppery radishes, fresh tomatoes, yummy cucumbers, small but sweet carrots, and crisp lettuces.

Thanks so much to Oak Hill School students and faculty for a wonderful overnight field trip last week. This 4th grade class celebrated their year by learning along trails and creeks, on the zipline and high ropes course, and at the archery range. It was a delightful two spring days of learning and play with these students!
