New NFA Rules Explained Simply.
As of January 1, 2026, the federal government eliminated the $200 tax stamp for suppressors (silencers), short-barreled r***es, short-barreled sh****ns, and certain other NFA fi****ms.
Here's what that means:
You save $200: The federal transfer tax is now $0 for those items.
Suppressors are still federally regulated: The tax elimination does not automatically eliminate ATF paperwork, registration, or approval requirements.
State laws still apply: A suppressor must be legal in your state.
🚨Major update🚨 — October 9, 2026: The ATF announced that it will no longer enforce federal registration or advance approval requirements for suppressors, short-barreled r***es, short-barreled sh****ns, and certain other fi****ms.
That means:
No mandatory federal Form 1 or Form 4 for covered items under the new enforcement policy.
No federal NFA registration required under that policy.
Regular dealer background checks and Form 4473 still apply.
Machine guns and destructive devices are not included.
🚨Important for North Carolina:
State laws (for now) still require federal registration or approval.
Bottom line:
The federal government has significantly reduced restrictions on suppressors and certain short-barreled fi****ms, but this is an ATF nonenforcement policy, not a complete repeal of the NFA.
