There’s a lot of conversation right now about data centers — especially their connection to AI, electricity use, and water. Those are important concerns, and they deserve good information. But one piece that often gets missed is that data centers aren’t just for AI.
They’re also holding all the everyday digital stuff we barely think about: your accidental screenshots, that blurry picture of your feet, every spam email you never deleted, every video of your grandchild’s first steps, the 47 nearly identical sunset photos you couldn’t choose between, that years-long text chain with your best friend, phone backups, documents, streaming, websites, banking, library systems, and a whole lot more. In other words, “the cloud” isn’t floating around somewhere in the sky. It lives on real computers, in real buildings, using real electricity — and sometimes water for cooling. AI is absolutely part of the data-center story, and it’s a rapidly growing part. But it isn’t the entire story.
This infographic isn’t meant to convince anyone to be for or against data centers. We just think good conversations start with understanding what they are, what they do, and what resources they use. The more complete the information, the better the conversation.
