The Witch by Freida McFadden — 4 stars
Freida McFadden is back in much better form here, which was a relief after that whole choose-your-own-adventure experiment that I would personally choose not to adventure through again. The Witch grabbed me right away. The story moves between Caroline in 1692 and Julia in the present day, and I am always a sucker for a mystery where the present has to dig through the past and discover that, surprise, the family history is absolutely not fine.
If you are seeing “witch,” “haunted estate,” and “1692” and thinking this is going to be terrifying, relax. The scares are pretty mild. You will probably sleep just fine. Like most McFadden books, it moves fast, the chapters fly by, and I kept turning pages because I needed to know what was going on.

Not groundbreaking, not nightmare fuel, but very entertaining.
