Dr. Shine received the 2024 Champion for Children Award from the Early Learning Centers of Lubbock, a community partner of the Lubbock Area United Way. The Champion for Children Award honors a Lubbock area individual, program or business that has made a significant impact on improving the lives of children under the age of six (6) through service, advocacy, funding, or education.

Learn about HDFS alum Ashley Penner, who graduated from Texas Tech University in 2012. She went on to receive her master's degree in Counselor Education with a focus in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Today, Penner is the Associate Director at the Texas Tech Career Center and is a doctoral candidate in the Counselor Education and Supervision program.

We are happy to announce that Derek Morgan won the NCFR Sibling Relationships Focus Group Student Paper Award! Derek will present his talk on, “The Role of Siblings in Emerging Adult Mental Health in the Face of Stressful Life Events,” at the NCFR conference in November 2023. He was supported by his co-authors, Kendall Moffett, Cassi O’Rourke, and myself. Please join us in congratulating Derek on receiving this honor!

Please join us in congratulating doctoral student, Narges Hadi. Narges has been selected as a recipient of the 2023 NCFR Issues in Aging Focus Group Student and New Professional Award! Her paper presentation title is "Intergenerational Solidarity With Digital Communication and Mental Health Between Older Parents and Adult Children During the COVID-19 Pandemic." Dr. Woosang Hwang, Narges’ research assistantship supervisor, is also an author on the paper. Narges will attend the NCFR conference and join the Issues in Aging Focus Group meeting for the award ceremony.

Congratulations to assistant professor, Dr. Woosang Hwang. He is the recipient of the 2023 NCFR Olson Grant and is the principal investigator for the grant. The title of his project is "Stability and Change of Intergenerational Solidarity with Digital Communication during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic in South Korea: Associations with Family Functioning."

Stella Courtney Crockett was the first African American woman from Texas Tech University to walk the stage at graduation in 1965. She graduated from the College of Human Sciences with a degree in Elementary Education, now our Early Childhood Education major. Crockett then dedicated 43 years of service as an educator, mainly in special education.

Dr. Alan Reifman delivered the invited keynote address at the biennial conference of the Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood (SSEA) in San Diego. His address was entitled “Examining youth political behavior in recent U.S. elections through the lens of emerging adulthood.”

Aubrey Pickett successfully defended her thesis yesterday too. Her thesis is titled “Predicting Intimate Terrorism Victimization through Authoritarian Parenting, Social Dominance Orientation, and Ambivalent Sexism” and her committee consisted of Dana Weiser, Elizabeth Sharp, and Sylvia Niehuis. Aubrey will be continuing on in the PhD program so we luckily get to continue working with her for a few years. Congratulations, Aubrey Pickett, M.S.!

Adam Thomas successfully defended his dissertation yesterday. His dissertation is titled “Trans & Thriving? Transgender Men's Romantic Relationships through Gender Transition” and his committee consisted of Dana Weiser, Elizabeth Sharp, Christy Rogers, and Monica Martin. Adam will be starting a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Colgate University in the LGBTQ studies program in August. Congratulations, Dr. Thomas!

Congratulations to Abigail Jordan and her Honors thesis advisor, Dr. Sylvia Niehuis. The Honors College selected Abigail Jordan's thesis "The Relationship Between Personality Traits and Fulfillment of Dating App Goals with Dating App Disillusionment and Relationship Outcomes" as the TTU finalist for the Portz prize this year. Her project was selected for its intellectual creativity, potential for impact, methodological rigor, and an extremely strong nomination letter.
