Guadalupe Bass & Blue Sucker Research

The public dissertation defense of Matthew Acre will be held today at 3:30 CST in Fish and Wildlife 101 at Texas Tech University. His defense will provide a detailed look at Blue Sucker (Cycleptus elongatus) life history and current status in the lower Colorado River, Texas. A species once harvested commercially throughout the United States, it has experienced dramatic declines throughout its range. The population in the Colorado River has been presumed to be in trouble for several years. Several biotic and abiotic factors have been identified as likely suspects in the decline. This research will shed light on those concerns.

Heather Williams, a researcher at the Texas Tech University Llano River Field Station, caught this beautiful 1.72lbs Guadalupe Bass, on the South Llano River. Location and lure are closely guarded secrets. It was released shortly after the photo taken.
