This international law program joins eligible U.S. law students with students from Lithuania and its All courses will be taught in English.

Lithuania is a European Union country and member of NATO that is located across the Baltic Sea from Sweden and Denmark. It makes for a fascinating education destination because of its deep cultural and historical roots and its post-World War II history. Lithuania is the largest of the Baltic countries and its history begins with the first written mention of its name in a medieval German manuscript

JOIN A GROWING TRADITION OF INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIP.

Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) was originally founded in 1922 as the University of Lithuania, the only institution of higher learning in the country during the period between the two World Wars; but changed its name in 1930 to honor one of Lithuania's greatest leaders, Grand Duke Vytautas the Great.

The University was shut down in 1950 after the Soviet invasion, but was reestablished in 1989 thanks, in major part, to the collective efforts of Lithuanian scholars that had emigrated to various parts of the world, including the U.S.

Understanding the importance of an international education, those participating in the rebirth of this university committed themselves to bringing back Lithuanian intellectuals and inviting foreign scholars with the idea of nurturing the intellectual and cultural rebirth of a nation whose self-identity had been stifled during the Soviet occupation.

Your participation in the summer study abroad program at VMU will be celebrated by both Lithuanian students and faculty because this great tradition of international education continues. You will study side by side with your Lithuanian counterparts, and learn from past, current and future leaders of this great nation at a fascinating time in their history.

Many friendships have been fostered among U.S. and Lithuanian students and faculty over the years, and we welcome you to become a part of this growing tradition!

Warmest Regards,
Jorge A. Ramirez

STUDYING ABROAD INCREASES CREATIVITY

I agree with the substance of the article linked below, but not so sure I like the title. Among other things, the author states: “anything that violates expectations . . . can boost creativity. For example, a semester spent studying abroad boosts students’ creativity. Why? New experiences that disrupt our usual way of life and show us a different perspective make us more mentally flexible or creative.”

Best Regards,
Jorge A. Ramirez, Professor of Law
Director of the 2015 Summer Program.
