Jade Montano, a double major in finance and accounting, has been selected as Rawls College's banner bearer for Texas Tech University's May 2024 commencement. This title is given to a student who best represents the college through achieving academic excellence, participating in extracurricular activities and demonstrating a high level of professionalism.

Montano initially pursued a management major but found her true calling in finance and accounting. Inspired by Dr. Bobby Merriman, who stressed the significance of coding in finance, she decided to pursue a certificate in data analytics alongside her majors. Throughout her time at Rawls College, guidance and mentorship from professors like Dr. Ezgi Ottolenghi, Dr. Roman Wang, Dr. Laura Cardella, and Dr. Jeffery Mercer played pivotal roles in her academic and personal development, providing invaluable support and guidance.

Montano will lead her fellow Rawls College classmates into the commencement ceremony next Saturday, May 11. Learn more about Montano and her academic journey at bit.ly/4di7tnZ

From law school sweethearts to leaders in their fields, Pat and Laura Gordon exemplify the power of giving back and making a difference.

In addition to their contributions to the Texas Tech University School of Law, the Gordons recently expanded their philanthropic footprint by establishing the Gordon Family Center for Real Estate Endowment last year. This generous gift is dedicated to supporting the Rawls College's Center for Real Estate, which was created to promote excellence in real estate education through academic programming, student engagement, research initiatives, and strong partnerships with alumni and industry experts.

Through their actions, Pat and Laura have demonstrated the profound influence that individuals can have on shaping the future of higher education and the lives of those who follow in their footsteps.

"What Tech does is change the lives of a lot of people, and we see that," Pat said. "We see it in ourselves. We see it in our other classmates, and we feel like it's our responsibility to give back and to be leaders of the school. We want the students and the faculty to know that we appreciate what they're doing and we're behind them. We have faith in this institution and are excited about its future."

Last month, the Rawls College Area of Management announced the appointment of two distinguished visiting research scholars: Michael Hitt and Duane Ireland.

Hitt and Ireland, both recognized as Impactful Individuals during Texas Tech University's Centennial celebration, bring extensive expertise in business strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation, and international business. The scholars rejoin Rawls College from Texas A&M University's Mays Business School, expressing a desire to give back to their alma mater.

Their appointments have generated excitement within the college, with Dean Margaret L. Williams expressing optimism about their potential to elevate the institution's global standing.

"I am deeply appreciative of Drs. Ireland and Hitt contacting me and sharing their interest in being re-associated with Texas Tech and the Rawls College of Business. We can draw on their experience to enhance the quality and impact of our own research and raise the status of the college, and especially the management area, simply by their association with us. It is impossible to estimate the value of their decision to join us."

As Rawls College student Junia Lee prepares to graduate with her bachelor's degree in management, her attention turns toward applying for doctoral programs. Although business research wasn't initially at the forefront of Lee's aspirations, her trajectory significantly changed after participating in the Rawls Undergraduate Research Program, where she was paired with Assistant Professor of Management Dr. Alanna Hirshman.

Over the course of two years, Lee and Hirshman fostered a strong mentor-mentee relationship that transformed how they saw their role as researchers. They developed a close bond, with Hirshman guiding Lee through the fundamentals of research, academic language, and data coding. As Lee continued to grow as a researcher, so did Hirshman.

Lee's journey from novice to aspiring scholar reflects the profound impact of mentorship and the transformative power of academic exploration. Read more about her experience in the Rawls Undergraduate Research Program and her hopes for the future at bit.ly/3IMoI2L.
