The legal fallout from the death of 12-year-old diver Dylan Harrison has entered a new phase.
Divers Alert Network (DAN) has reportedly filed a federal action seeking clarification on insurance coverage obligations connected to the ongoing wrongful-death lawsuit involving PADI, NAUI, dive businesses, and individual professionals.
While some headlines suggest DAN is "suing" the agencies, the filing appears to focus on who ultimately bears financial responsibility if liability is established.
The implications could extend far beyond a single case and affect insurance, training oversight, and risk management throughout the dive industry.

SDI - Scuba Diving International has made a significant industry decision by revising their standards for Open Water training. We hope the rest of the industry follows suit. We don't need 12 year old deaths during NAUI OWD training. We don't need young women in dry suits with no inflator hose and over weight being trained by PADI instructor not certified to teach divers in dry suits either.
We Care About Safety
At Scuba Diving International (SDI), diver safety has always guided how we train, teach, and evolve. Our updated Open Water standards reinforce that commitment through enhanced instructor ratios, stronger student oversight, and a continued focus on quality diver education. These updates include revi...

I can’t emphasize this enough folks. This and others like it are not valid as the dive industry doesn’t set the standards. DOT and the CGA do. Also they didn’t indicate the year it was done properly. Don’t dive tanks with BS stickers and we won’t fill them.

DOT inspector showed up unannounced yesterday and spent 3 hours going through our hydro testing program. We passed! And I was able to point out in the DOT regulations where he was misinformed on a couple issues. When he sends the official report I will reply with another one he was wrong on, proving a DOT letter for proof. In all fairness he was a good inspector and I did learn a few things which as an old Army inspector we should always learn something from inspections. It is why, as an instructor for PADI, SDI and SSI I have learned something by being associated with all of the professional scuba training agencies. A recent PADI OWD I did a referral for admitted that he learned quite a bit from me that PADI never presented. Folks, if we aren’t learning from each other we never progress.

Always dive with a SMB
A 31-year-old American Airlines flight attendant has died after what investigators believe was a vessel strike while snorkelling or diving off the Florida coast.
Authorities are still searching for answers and are appealing for witnesses as the investigation continues.
For divers, the tragedy is another reminder of the risks posed by boat traffic, even for experienced water users.
