NRM Ranch Management Master’s students attend horsemanship clinic instructed by Mr. Joe Leathers past President of the Four Sixes Ranch.

This 3-day intensive clinic helped students connect with the horse’s mind and body to develop discipline and respect. Students with skills from beginner to intermediate were guided by Mr. Leathers to control five body parts of the horse (head, neck, shoulder, rib, and hip) to build a foundation. While those skills were being developed, students were grouped by skill level to focus on how to build a solid working relationship with their horse. Special thanks to Tabatha Taylor, TTU Equestrian Coach, for allowing us to use your space and horses.

Learning, Networking, & Growing – Highlights from Ranch Day at the Ranching Heritage Museum

Saturday, April 25th, Ranch Management Master’s students, George Graybill, Keaton Wiske, and Ty Schaeferkoeter attended Ranch Day at the Ranching Heritage Museum. Ty’s younger sister Claire, an Ag Com major, came out to help too! The Ranch comes alive with real cowboys, livestock and activities centered around ranch life, offering hands-on experience to kids of all ages.

While our students volunteered at the station hosted by Happy Toy Maker out of Happy, TX. As Ty reported, “The kids were able to play with toy cattle pens, trucks and trailers, squeeze chutes, and various cattle and horse toys. It gave them the chance to just be kids and play, while also learning along the way. We got down on their level and showed them how ranchers actually use that equipment in real-life situations. The toys were very detailed — all of the features on the squeeze chutes worked, and the pens and trailers could be moved around just like the real thing.” Dr. Rusk worked with the branding crew where attendees could request what was branded on their block of wood. The biggest challenge he received was to brand the Incredible Hulk!
