Field Chronicles – Fostering Education with Exploration

NRM Graduate Student Jorge Rivero recently returned from Lima, Peru where he spent most of the summer preparing for data collection for his research. Research began with preparation before we even made it out into the field. Good preparation helps ensure that data collected are meaningful, reliable, and useful. See Jorge’s recap below.

Getting things ready for the field! Batteries, tripods, and other supplies were purchased for the upcoming acoustic bat monitoring and insect sampling for my dissertation. I also ran a few successful pilot tests to capture insects with a light trap.

Working in Partnership - New NRM Project Focuses on Horned Lizard Recovery

NRM’s Dr. AHM Ali Reza will lead the research project, with support from Spur-area rancher Charles Hodges and collaboration with the Horned Lizard Conservation Society through the Royal Alberta Museum to better understand how one of the state’s most iconic reptiles is responding to changing landscapes.

Learning, Networking, & Growing - Highlights from the first Cows & Code Training Program

Last week, Norris Lab Ph.D. students Diego Aviles and Brittney Schilling had the opportunity to attend the first Cows & Code program, hosted by Oklahoma State University in collaboration with Central Queensland University.
Cows & Code is an intensive international training program for livestock researchers focused on smart farming, animal sensors, and data analytics. The program provided a great opportunity to explore emerging technologies in livestock research, develop new skills, and connect with researchers and students from around the world.
We are excited to bring these new ideas and experiences back to the Norris Lab and apply them to our research!
