What's Happening Wednesday: Abilene Campus Highlight

There have been some great things happening down at our Abilene campus! From Next Stop Nursing camps to Rural Cancer Collaborative projects, but today we wanted to highlight the new campus renovations. Down in Abilene our campus is getting a beautiful refresh, they have added more classrooms and study spaces, and installed some great artwork and refreshed branding. So to all of our Abilene Alumni, next time you are in the area your may want to check out your old stomping grounds, because pretty soon you may not recognize it!

Our favorite time of the year is officially here! We will be hosting our Alumni Chill and Grill Tailgate this Saturday, September 5th in Raider Alley, tent 3! We would like to give a huge thank you to Dermatology Associates of West Texas for sponsoring our very first tailgate of the season. We wouldn't be able to cheer on our fighting Red Raiders without your generous support!

We have a bunch of exiting new additions to the tailgate and we cant wait for y'all to see them. This weekend we will be highlighting the Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health, which means if you are an JJMSPPH Alumni, you have special early access starting 3 hours before kickoff, all other Alumni are welcome to join 2 hours before kickoff! We cant wait to see y'all there, Wreck 'Em!!

We want to highlight one of our Alumni Advisory Board Members, Dr. Ashley Sturgeon!

Dr. Sturgeon is a native of Midland. She graduated with honors from Texas Tech with a degree in Animal & Food Science, where she met her husband Jason. She graduated with honors from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. Dr. Sturgeon completed an internship in Internal Medicine, residency in Dermatology, and fellowship in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology. She is board certified in Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery. She is a partner with Dr. Brent Paulger and Dr. Keith Wisniewski at Dermatology Associates of West Texas and is a former president of the Lubbock County Medical Society. She is most proud of her teaching award from the Texas Medical Association and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Animal and Food Sciences Department. Dr. Sturgeon started the dermatology clinic at the Lubbock Impact Free Clinic, and continues to serve there today. She and her husband Jason live in Wolfforth with their sons, Levi and Luke.

Did you know that 75% of all Physician Assistants in the Permian Basin are from our Permian Basin campuses? In honor of World Breast Cancer Research Day, we would like to share the amazing work being done at the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health!

In 2007, the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health was established within TTUHSC with the goal of creating a new approach to women’s health. In 2024, the Laura W. Bush Institute, in partnership with the Bexa Equity Alliance (BEA), launched the Access to Breast Health for Texans (ABHT) initiative. This initiative has helped bring comprehensive breast exams to rural communities across Texas using the Bexa Process. The Bexa Process uses a Bexa scan and targeted ultrasound. These technologies are small, portable, and do not use radiation, making the process more comfortable and accessible.

This wellness month we want to remind our alumni to take time for themselves, whether that's taking a fun vacation or an extra five minutes to breath during a long shift, you deserve to prioritize YOU!
