Sam Thurber is a recipient one of our 5 F.W. Mattox Scholarships, the top academic award offered by the Honors College and LCU. Sam has lived in Lubbock, Texas, for most of her life. She has three cats and one puppy, and she likes to read, study, and hang out with friends. Her major is Animal Science with a Pre-Veterinary Emphasis, and she is interested in animals, medicine, and research. Sam is part of the Ag and Pre-Vet club and plans to get involved with Undergraduate Research. She is very excited to learn and to grow closer to her new friends here at LCU.

The Honors College is glad to welcome Mattox Scholar Jaymeson Evans—the F.W. Mattox scholarship is the highest academic award at LCU. Jaymeson is originally from Nash, Oklahoma, but when she was four, her family moved as foreign missionaries to Zambia, Africa, where she has lived for the past 14 years. She is majoring in Animal Science, Pre-Vet, hoping to specialize in large animal medicine and provide care for farms and ranches. She loves singing, playing guitar, and dancing, having taught dance to about 70 kids in the last few years. Jaymeson is the fourth of five kids, and she has a Lab/German Shepherd mix named Jake—he's the sweetest and biggest baby. She has joined the pre-vet club and can't wait to get involved in as much as she can on campus. Jaymeson is really looking forward to building lifelong friendships over my four years here, as well as making incredible memories through the beauty of everyday life.

Reas Harper is a recipient one of our 5 F.W. Mattox Scholarships, the top academic award offered by the Honors College and LCU. Reas grew up in Lubbock, but he has lived all over the state of Texas. He is a Youth and Family Ministry major, and his interests include archery, guitar, singing, gaming, and piano. He is a member of LCU’s eSports team for Mario Kart and Smash Bros.

The Honors College is glad to welcome Mattox Scholar Kendall DeBlanc—the F.W. Mattox scholarship is the highest academic award at LCU. Kendall is from Phoenix, Arizona, and she is studying Psychology and Ministry, as she is passionate about both areas of study. She also loves music and writing songs on the acoustic guitar and on the keyboard. Kendall enjoys scrapbooking and watercolor painting, as well as outdoor activities like snowboarding! She is a student-athlete at LCU, playing on the women’s soccer team, and she also getting started with “SPARK,” the new child mentorship program on campus. Kendall is also looking forward to working with the Mission Link team, as she is committed to serving the body of Christ across the globe. She is most looking forward to getting to learn and love an entirely new community—excited to pursue her studies through a spiritual lens!

The Honors College is glad to welcome Gracen Ruckman, a recipient one of our five F.W. Mattox Scholarships, the top academic award offered by LCU. Gracen is from Hydro/Weatherford, Oklahoma, and is majoring in Youth and Family Ministry. He loves reading, board games, and video games, as well as soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Gracen has an interest in engineering, having built robots, and also a love for music and singing. He is looking forward to getting to know people and building connections here on campus, whether through club, intramurals, or piano and guitar lessons.

The LCU Honors in Oxford trip was an 11-day journey filled with historical sites and sightseeing experiences—6 days in Oxford and 5 in London. Our 16 students were led by Dr. Kenneth Hawley and his wife, Deborah, and by Dr. Daniel Whitefield. Our time in Oxford included highlights like our stay at The Vines, the Oxford Divinity School, the Ashmolean Museum, the Natural History Museum, Christ Church Cathedral, the Oxford Botanical Gardens, and the graves of both C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

The first Mabee Honors College Oxford Seminar group departs Lubbock today. Faculty leaders are Drs. Kenneth Hawley (English & Theology) and Daniel Whitefield (Biology & Chemistry). This Oxford experience is the result of more than a decade of planning, beginning with five successive summer Honors Oxford research programs for individual students (Bethany McMillan Ewumi, Journee Cotton Schroeder, Olivia Brown Jones, Cassidy Davis, and Sarah Fantinel) and an Honors faculty research fellowship year (Dr. Amanda Ellis).

We are thrilled to begin this new annual Honors College premier adventure, featuring seminar study, academic tours, and a final London weekend experience. The program, coordinated with the support of the Council on Christian College's Scholarship & Christianity in Oxford program, is made possible by the generous support of the college's named funders, the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Foundation.
