Texas Tech University Department of Animal & Food Sciences Stay connected with news & information important to students, faculty and alumni of the Department.

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences is home to more than 1,000 undergraduates, 90 graduate students and 30 active faculty members. Many faculty members are leading researchers in their respective fields, including food science, food safety, muscle biology, nutrition, animal wellbeing, breeding and genetics, and physiology with specialties in cattle, horse, sheep & goats, and swine. Students

in the department have the opportunity to customize their degree plan by choosing one of 13 undergraduate degree plans. Advanced degrees are also offered in both animal and food sciences. Students enjoy learning in a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility which features five specialized teaching and research labs, the largest retail meat cooler on a university campus, and a retail store, "COWamongus!" Hands-on and experiential learning are important components of a student’s education and are made possible through centers which focus on beef, sheep, swine and equine. Students also have the opportunity to be involved in competitive teams and earn leadership roles in student organizations within the department. Alumni of the department are highly regarded and extremely diverse in their careers. Many veterinarians, medical doctors, and leaders within major agricultural companies are proud to have degrees from the department.
