Did you know that affects how your body converts food into energy? When you eat food it is converted to glucose so your body can use it. Insulin is a hormone that controls glucose or “blood sugar” and helps your body use it for energy. In diabetes, your body doesn't make enough insulin or can't use it as well as it should so too much glucose or blood sugar stays in the bloodstream. Over time, this can cause serious health problems such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

There is no cure for diabetes, but losing weight, eating healthy and being active can really help. Other things you can do to help are see your healthcare provider, take the medicine as directed, and get help from a registered dietitian or health coach.

Some reduced-carb diets may decrease diabetes risk, but others may raise it Low-carb eating that is plant-based may reduce the risk for Type 2 diabetes, but approaches that emphasize animal-based foods may raise it, new research suggests.

You’ve probably heard that a lack of sleep is bad for your health, but did you know that it can contribute to obesity as well? Leptin, the hormone that suppresses your appetite, decreases with short sleep. Ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates your appetite, increases with a lack of sleep. Both of these can cause you to feel hungrier throughout the day, leading to overeating.

To help keep your appetite in check, try to get enough sleep per night.
