🌞 Dr. Allison Childress, quoted by the AHA, highlights how extreme heat affects our eating habits and health:

🍽️ Heat & Appetite: High temperatures suppress appetites as our bodies avoid generating excess heat through digestion.

πŸ₯— Eating Right: Despite lower appetites, Dr. Childress recommends frequent meals rich in protein and fiber to maintain essential nutrients.

πŸ’§ Stay Hydrated: Hydration is crucial in hot weather. Water is best; add a slice of orange or cucumber for flavor. Limit caffeine and alcohol intake to avoid dehydration.

πŸ‰ Cooling Foods: Foods high in water content like melons and berries not only hydrate but also provide cooling effects. Opt for cold foods for added relief.

🌍 Impact of Heat Waves: Extreme heat worsens food insecurity and affects food availability and accessibility, especially in vulnerable communities.

πŸ›’ Prepare Wisely: Stock up on nutritious foods before heat waves to minimize outdoor trips, particularly for those in food deserts or lacking transportation.

Body composition explains the proportions of fat, muscle, bone, and water in your body. It gives a clearer picture of your health as it shows whether you have a healthy amount of muscle and fat. Muscle is a metabolically active tissue, which means it burns calories even when you're at rest. Monitoring muscle mass using body composition measuring equipment, helps in guiding strategies for weight management and maintaining a healthy metabolism.

What is BMI (Body Mass Index):
BMI is a number based on your weight and height. It's used to estimate if you're underweight, normal weight, overweight, or have obesity. However, it doesn't tell you how much of your weight is fat versus muscle. The J-shaped BMI curve highlights that both extremes of BMI (underweight and severe obesity) can be associated with increased mortality risk. It also highlights the importance of maintaining a BMI within the normal weight range for overall health and longevity. The curve starts with a relatively low mortality rate at the lower end of BMI (underweight or normal weight range). As BMI increases into the overweight and obesity categories, the mortality rate also increases.
