9/22 @ 11 AM CDT - Scattered showers and storms this morning will continue through this evening. A few storms may become strong to severe, primarily east of the I-27 and HWY-87 corridor. Main threats will be large hail up to the size of quarters and damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.
Much cooler temperatures today in the 60s and 70s as a southward moving front pushes through. Only exception will be for the SE Rolling Plains where highs in the 80s will be reached. Storms will track along the front with heavy rain and localized flooding possible.
⚠️⛈️ A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for most areas along and west of the I-27 corridor, and is in effect until 11 PM. Damaging wind gusts and large hail are the primary hazards, but a few tornadoes are also possible especially near the TX/NM state line.
🕐 Storms are expected to develop across eastern New Mexico this afternoon and push east into the far southwest Texas Panhandle and western South Plains between 4-7 PM. Storms will move eastward towards the I-27 corridor and Caprock Escarpment around 7-10 PM. Storm coverage may decrease tonight from south to north, with the highest chances across the far southern Texas Panhandle and northern Rolling Plains after 10 PM.
Increasing chances for thunderstorms this afternoon as they develop near the NM/TX border and move east into the far SW TX Panhandle and western South Plains. All hazards are possible this afternoon including heavy rainfall which may lead to localized flooding. Stay today!

Today will be similar to yesterday with hot temperatures in the 90s to lower 100s under mostly clear skies and breezy southerly winds. A few isolated thunderstorms may clip portions of the far southwestern TX Panhandle this afternoon. Severe thunderstorm chances return Saturday to areas west of I-27.
Dry and quiet weather conditions continue across our region tonight. Lows will be relatively mild for this time of year, ranging from the mid 60s near the TX/NM state line to the mid 70s off the Caprock.
Thunderstorm chances continue to steadily creep upward for portions of the Caprock and Rolling Plains on Saturday into early Sunday. The greatest coverage of storms is forecast to be across the extreme southern Texas Panhandle. Some storms may be severe, capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and locally heavy rainfall.
Summer isn't budging yet as we continue to forecast highs in the 90s to around 100 today. Childress' record high today of 100° should be tied and possibly broken.
We'll have a slight chance of some isolated storms through this evening before dry conditions return tonight. Looking ahead, rain chances will make a comeback over the weekend, especially on Saturday.
The heat builds today and helps fuel some afternoon storms mainly on the Caprock. Any of these storms could become severe with damaging winds and hail.
A severe thunderstorm in eastern New Mexico is expected to track into northern Bailey County within the hour. Hail and strong winds can be expected with this storm. Have a plan to stay weather aware!
Thunderstorm chances remain in tact this evening as storms move in from the higher terrain to our east. Some storms may become strong to severe with strong winds up to 60 mph as the main threat. Along with locally heavy rainfall which may lead to localized flash flooding.

The highest chances for showers and storms will be across the far southwest Texas Panhandle and northern South Plains. A few storms may initially become strong to severe with the main threats being damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and localized flooding due to heavy rainfall. The shower and storm activity will diminish late tonight as it pushes eastward across the far southern Texas Panhandle and northern South and Rolling Plains.
Breezy south winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 25-30 mph are expected this afternoon, with the higher winds along the Caprock. Ahead of the rain chances later today, skies will be mostly sunny with above normal temperatures today in the upper 80s along the Caprock into the lower 90s off the Caprock.
Warm/hot afternoons & periodic t-storm chances will exist the next 5 days. The best storm chances in Lubbock will be Tuesday evening, Wednesday afternoon/evening and late Friday night into Saturday.
Mostly sunny skies today with breezy south-southeast winds and warm temperatures in the upper 80s to mid 90s. An isolated thunderstorm or two is possible this afternoon and evening across the far southeast Texas Panhandle and Rolling Plains. If a storm develops and strengthens, the main threats would be small hail, gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall.
Temperatures will not be as hot as yesterday thanks to the winds turning to the southeast by this afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms are forecast to affect portions of the extreme southern Texas Panhandle, and the northern South and Rolling Plains, late this afternoon and early evening. The severe weather threat is low.
Climate tidbit for this morning: The low at the Lubbock Airport was a balmy 72˚F. Assuming this holds (which is likely), today will go down with the 2nd warmest low on records for September 14th. Only 1930 saw a warmer start to a September 14, with a low of 73˚F.
Hot temperatures will occur once again today with increasing cloud cover from the south. Near-record high temperatures are forecast at Lubbock and Childress. Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop and move across portions of the South Plains, the far southern Texas Panhandle, and northern Rolling Plains this afternoon. The severe weather threat is low.
Breezy and hot conditions are expected area-wide today as the dryline moves eastward across the South Plains. Southwesterly wind gusts between 25-30 mph will occur for a few hours this afternoon behind the dryline while winds remain out of the south ahead of it. A slight chance for a thunderstorm or two exists across the far southeastern Texas Panhandle this afternoon. The severe weather threat is low. Storm chances will end at sunset.
Warmer but near normal overnight lows expected tonight. Breezy southeasterly winds will help keep temperatures near normal in the 60s.
