Lubbock Public Library Launches 2026 Summer Reading Program With Free Events, Prizes, CitiBus Rides and Family Fun

LUBBOCK, Texas — Lubbock Public Library is getting ready to turn reading into a summer-long adventure for families across the city.

The 2026 Summer Reading Program officially runs June 1 through July 31, offering free reading challenges, activities, prizes and events for children, teens and adults. Families can sign up for free through Lubbock.ReadSquared.com or by downloading the ReadSquared app.

The goal is simple: keep Lubbock reading, learning and connected all summer long.

Readers can log books, audiobooks, eBooks and even graphic novels to earn points toward prize opportunities. The program is open to all ages, making it something the whole family can participate in together.

This year’s theme brings plenty of dinosaur-themed fun. Featured events include the Summer Reading Kick-Off Party at Patterson Branch Library on Friday, May 29, a Dinosaur Stomp at Higginbotham Park on Monday, June 1, and special “Stegatorus Storytimes” at several City of Lubbock parks throughout June and July.

Other highlights include Echoes of Africa on June 15, a Juneteenth Kick-Off and Media Day on June 18, Old MacDonald’s Petting Zoo on July 9, and Tortellini’s Birthday Party on July 16. Families can also take part in a citywide Tortellini scavenger hunt from July 13 through July 18 at Lubbock library locations.

The library is also partnering with CitiBus again this summer. Families who register for the Summer Reading Program can receive a special code for a free CitiBus pass through the GoPass app, giving them complimentary rides to and from the library from June 1 through July 31.

The summer will wrap up with a major community event: the 2026 Citywide Back-2-School Bash with Texas Tech University on Saturday, August 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. The event will offer free backpacks, school supplies, community resources and more. Children must be present to receive a backpack.

Some library programs may require registration or tickets due to limited space. Tickets are first come, first served and can only be picked up at the designated library 15 minutes before the program begins.

The program will be available through all Lubbock Public Library branches, including Godeke, Groves, Mahon and Patterson.

For many families, the summer reading program is more than just books. It is a safe place to learn, a chance for children to stay engaged while school is out, and a reminder that Lubbock’s libraries remain one of the city’s strongest free resources.
