Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District The Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District serves all of Sierra County and the eastern quarter of Plumas County.

The District Governing Board also serve

s as the Sierra County Board of Education. Schools include Loyalton High 7-12, Downieville School K-12, and Loyalton Elementary K-6. Introducing Sierra County
Sierra County lies northeast of Sacramento and borders the State of Nevada on the east. Located in the heart of the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains, it contains one-half million acres of forest land, forty-five mountain lakes, and an estimated seven hundred miles of trout streams. The eastern quarter of Plumas County lies within the boundaries of the Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District, and children from the towns of Vinton and Chilcoot attend school in Loyalton. Elevations within the District range from 2000 to nearly 9000 feet. Heavy snowfall and extreme temperatures are the general rule during the winter at the higher elevations. Eastern Sierra and Plumas counties include the great Sierra Valley, once an ancient lake bed but now the largest alpine valley in the Sierra Nevada range, a natural area for agricultural, timber production and mineral extraction operations. The western portion of Sierra County is heavily forested, has timber management areas, and contains both lode and placer gold mining operations. Gold was discovered here in 1849, and the area is rich in early California history. Recreational activities abound including fishing, hunting, skiing, hiking, camping, boating, and visits to points of historical interest.

Good evening, Grizzlies! This is Mrs. Griffin, your Loyalton High School principal, with this week’s All-Call.

We are so excited that all of our 9th graders will be heading to Grizzly Creek Ranch for a three-day team-bonding retreat! We are incredibly grateful for this fun and educational experience at no cost to our 9th-grade students.

A quick reminder: Please take a look around at home for any extra textbooks that may still be out. We are missing books in a few subject areas, and some may still be with former students.

As we begin our third week tomorrow, students should be settling in and getting into their routines. Please use PowerSchool to check grades and help support your student with schoolwork at home. Afterschool tutoring is available with teachers, and peer tutors are also available on Wednesdays.

We are also very excited about the strong pathways we offer at Loyalton High School. These college and career readiness programs allow students to explore careers, gain hands-on experience, and develop skills that can lead to college, careers, certifications, and other opportunities after high school. Our CTE pathways are intentionally designed in sequence, with each course building on the knowledge and skills from the previous class. Some of our courses are also articulated with colleges, allowing students to earn college credit, and the final course in a pathway is called the capstone, where students bring together the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout the pathway. For this reason, we encourage students to stay on their pathway sequence whenever possible so they can take full advantage of these opportunities.

Athlete grade checks will begin next Tuesday. Remember, an athlete cannot miss a class in which they have a failing grade, so please encourage students to keep their grades up and turn in assignments on time. First-quarter progress reports will be available September 25th.

This week’s handbook review is Page 2: Student Learning Outcomes. Please take a few minutes to review these with your child. At Loyalton High School, we strive to develop Knowledgeable, Critical Thinkers; Effective Communicators; and Healthy Individuals.

Coming up this Thursday, we will have our first FFA meeting for parents and students at 6:00 p.m. on the baseball field.

This week in sports: Soccer has a home game Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against Plumas Charter, and football travels to John Swett on Friday.

Looking ahead, we will not have school next Monday in observance of Labor Day. Back-to-School Night is Wednesday, September 9th, at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Title I meeting for anyone interested in attending.

Have a wonderful Sunday evening—and, as always, GO GRIZZLIES!

8-23-26

Good evening, Grizzlies! This is Mrs. Griffin, your Loyalton High School principal, with this week’s all-call.
We did it! The first week of school is officially in the books, and it was a success!

First-Day Packets:

First-day packets went home last week. Please make sure to complete all the forms, especially the Free and Reduced Lunch page, and return them to the office. These forms help our school receive funding for programs and services, which means more opportunities for our kids.

Our college and career counselors have worked incredibly hard to help students find the right path toward graduation while also keeping their future opportunities in mind. They bring a wealth of knowledge and are committed to helping each student build a schedule that supports their goals—whether that means college, career, CTE, Military, or another path after high school.

And remember, it’s okay for things to be hard. High school is a time to challenge ourselves, try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. Sometimes the classes or paths that challenge us the most are the ones that help us grow the most. We want our students to know that they are supported, and that asking for help is always a sign of strength.

Student Handbook Reminder:

Don’t forget to go over the student handbook with your child. There is some really important information in there.

In Section 2, under Student Drivers, it reminds us that all student drivers must park in the main school parking lot and obey the posted speed limit.

Also, on Page 12 under Energy Drinks, the handbook states that because of the health risks associated with teenagers consuming energy drinks, they are not allowed on school campus or in the possession of students during school-sponsored activities.

Looking Ahead:

Our 9th graders will be going on their retreat August 31–September 2. Please be on the lookout for the forms and make sure they are completed so your student can participate in this free retreat.

The first FFA meeting for parents and students will be held September 3 at 6:00 p.m. on the baseball field.

Sports News:

Great job to our JV girls volleyball on Friday with the big “W,” and congratulations to our soccer team on their big win as well! Way to start the year!

This Week in Grizzly Sports:

Monday: Volleyball travels to Westwood.
Tuesday: Home volleyball game vs. Plumas Charter at 4:00 and 5:30 p.m.
Friday: Soccer competes in the Fall River Tournament.
Saturday: Football travels to Virginia City for a 1:00 p.m. game, and volleyball travels to the Westwood Tournament.

Let’s pack the stands and cheer on our athletes! Don't forget to fill out your LHS booster forms.

Have a wonderful Sunday evening—and, as always, GO GRIZZLIES!

8-16-26

Good evening, Loyalton High School parents and students. This is Mrs. Griffin with your first weekly All-Call of the 2026–2027 school year!

We are excited to welcome everyone back and loved seeing so many of you at Grizzlies Day on Friday. We are looking forward to a great year together!

The first day of school is this Wednesday, August 19, at 7:55 a.m. We will begin the morning with a welcome assembly in the gym, so please plan to arrive early. Breakfast will be served at 7:45 a.m. at the elementary school. Wednesday is also an early-release day, with dismissal at 1:35 p.m.

A reminder to our student drivers: please follow all posted speed limits in town and maintain 5 miles per hour while on campus. Students should park in the school parking area in front of the school. Students may not drive between LES and LHS during school hours or leave campus without permission from the office. Please see page 11 of the student handbook for additional information. Safety first!

During the first week of school, all students will spend Flex with their teachers reviewing the LHS Student Handbook. This includes important information about extracurricular eligibility, dress code, no energy drinks, our no-phone policy, and other school expectations. Please take some time to review the handbook with your student at home as well.

We do our best to build schedules that ensure every student is on track for graduation and prepared for life after LHS. If your student needs an approved schedule change, those changes must be completed by Friday, August 28.

If you have already called the District and added your child to a bus route list, your child has a seat on the bus. There will not be individual calls to confirm bus assignments. If you have not yet reserved a place on the bus, please contact the District Office as soon as possible to have your child added to the appropriate route list. 530-993-1660 ext 151. At this time, there are still a few seats available on our routes. Once a route reaches capacity, seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and additional students will be placed on a waiting list. A reminder from the DO: a student must be on the approved bus list to ride the bus. Students who are not on the list cannot simply show up and ride.

As many of you saw on Grizzlies Night, LHS offers a wide variety of sports, clubs, events, and activities throughout the school year. September is especially busy, with athletics, after-school activities, and field trips. Be sure to check the LHS website Events Calendar regularly for upcoming dates.

The Sierra County Wellness Center is excited to celebrate the new school year with you! Tuesday, August 25 4:00 PM–5:30 PM Wellness Center – 706 Mill St., Loyalton School supplies for every high school student! Pizza will be provided! Don’t miss out on this fun back-to-school celebration!

In FFA news, our FFA Chapter Officers will attend the Leadership Conference this Friday in Nevada City.

And in sports news, our volleyball team travels to Herlong on Monday, and soccer has a home game Friday against EnCompass. Come out and support our Grizzlies!

Thank you, and we look forward to a fantastic school year. Have a great first week, and as always, GO GRIZZLIES!
