Mill City Music Studio Policy & Values Addendum

At Mill City Music Studio, my teaching approach is carefully structured around early foundational development. For pedagogical reasons, I accept new students who are absolute beginners between the ages of 5 and 7, and I do not accept transfer students. These policies are based on long-term educational considerations, and I’m always happy to discuss the reasoning in more detail with interested families.

Mill City Music Studio is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. I do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, s*x, s*xual orientation, gender identity or expression, or family structure.

While I do not have specialized certification in teaching neurodivergent students, I have some experience working with a range of learning styles and needs. I approach each student with flexibility, respect, and openness, and I am willing to have a conversation to determine whether my studio would be a good fit.

I am looking for absolute beginners, ages 5-7 only.

Early childhood is a prime time for musical development, and with a Music Learning Theory approach, your child will build true musical understanding, not just mechanical skill. Through audiation-based learning, playful movement, and exploration of tonal and rhythm patterns, young learners internalize music the way they acquire language—naturally, joyfully, and deeply. MLT-based piano lessons lay the foundation for lifelong musicianship, developing not just finger technique but true inner hearing, expressive ability, and creativity.

Unlike me, Marilyn taught group classes. She is the author of "Music Moves for Piano," the first method that fully incorporates Music Learning Theory. She knew and worked with Edwin Gordon, who researched and published about Music Learning Theory for 50 years.
