Susmitha is a member of the Fall 2020 cohort and joined the UML community with a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from SRM Easwari Engineering College in Chennai, India.
Susmitha chose the CSP program because of the opportunities provided to work with historically marginalized communities, which she has taken advantage of through the Practicum course as her placement at the International Institute of New England has allowed her to help refugees and immigrants through the process of finding a job.
Susmitha’s favorite class has been Forensic Psychology with Dr. Neil Shortland as she enjoys learning about the science of human behavior intersected with the criminal justice system.
Susmitha is passionate about economic equality, access to healthcare, and food security and hopes to focus on such issues post-graduation by pursuing a career in the non-profit, healthcare, or federal sector.

🤩 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT 🤩
Bersy is a member of the Fall 2020 cohort and joined the UML community with a BA in Psychology from Coastal Carolina University. She chose the CSP program because of the interesting classes offered, the impressive faculty, and the presence of diversity.
Bersy’s favorite class has been Immigrant Psychology with Dr. Jana Sladkova because she enjoyed hearing about her classmates’ personal experiences, learning about various policies, and highlighting the stories of immigrant authors. Coming from a family of immigrants has fueled Bersy’s passion for immigration reform and heightened her awareness of the daily oppression that immigrants encounter.
She is currently doing her practicum placement at The Center for Hope and Healing where she focuses on advocating for survivors of sexual assault through efforts of policy research, civic engagement promotion, and meeting with legislators. Her work also involves developing a needs assessment for the Spanish speaking survivors in which she hopes to gather information on their attitudes and perceptions of the services provided by the center.
Bersy aspires to pursue a career post-graduation where she can uplift historically marginalized groups and advocate for change.
