AHPS is providing information to help Alleghany County and Covington voters understand the November 3 referendum regarding a proposed additional 1% local sales tax for school capital needs.

The option is authorized by the Commonwealth of Virginia, and voters will determine the outcome at the November 3 election.

AHPS does not endorse or oppose the referendum. This communication is intended solely to provide general information and encourage voters to make an informed decision.

This informational message will also appear in the Alleghany High School football program this fall.

Here’s a little glimpse into a typical learning day in Michelle Via’s kindergarten classroom at Mountain View Elementary! 🍎📚

Each morning, Peyton Nicely, a senior at AHS, joins Mrs. Via’s class to help with the kindergarten students. Peyton is also a student at JRTC in the Intro to Early Childhood class, where she is gaining hands-on experience and discovering what it means to work with young children.

We are proud of Peyton for investing her time in our young students, and grateful to Mrs. Via for helping provide such a meaningful opportunity! 🌟

The late Dolly Parton was known for her kindness and generosity toward others. 🦋💛

At Sharon Elementary, first-grade teacher Hope Arthur is using Dolly’s life and example to teach her students about character and kindness. 📚🌟

It’s a meaningful way to introduce young students to the values Dolly lived by and how her life impacted so many people. 💕

AHPS Director of Instruction Cynthia Morgan has been busy visiting our schools to see instruction in action!

During her visit to Sharon Elementary, Mrs. Morgan spent time talking with Charlotte Jordan, who is in her first year as the school’s art teacher. And Ms. Jordan is already making her mark! 🎨

Welcome to Sharon Elementary, Ms. Jordan; we’re so glad you’re here! ❤️🎨

🏫Covington Middle School Off to a Great Start🤗

Principal Lori Mattson reports that the school year is off to a great start at Covington Middle School.

In Burke Harris’ 7th-grade art class, students are working on their first watercolor project of the year, bringing fall leaves to life through color and blending techniques.

Students are exploring warm and cool colors and practicing how to blend shades to create smooth transitions. Their artwork is beginning to take shape, and we look forward to seeing the finished projects.

We can’t help but brag a little about the fresh new look in the Callaghan Elementary School cafeteria this year!

A big thank-you to Principal Lisa Hansford, Custodian Todd Frye, and all of the AHPS staff who helped make this transformation happen over the summer.

Students are now welcomed by fresh colors, graphics, and encouraging messages to brighten their days.

Thanks also to Mannifest and United Signs for their work on the graphics. We’re proud of the difference this team effort has made!

📣AHPS Reading Gains Draw State and National Recognition! 🎉

Alleghany Highlands Public Schools is celebrating significant gains in student reading performance!

👏 AHPS was recognized by the Virginia Department of Education as one of just 13 Virginia school divisions to achieve a five-point gain in reading or math, and one of only three divisions statewide to achieve a five-point gain in reading.

🏫 Callaghan Elementary and Sharon Elementary were also recognized nationally through The 74 Million’s Bright Spots program, which highlights high-performing schools demonstrating strong third-grade reading achievement.

Covington Middle School saw an impressive eight-point gain in reading, too!

The photo below offers a glimpse of the work behind these results. AHPS teachers continue sharpening their literacy skills through year-round professional learning, including a summer workshop focused on verbal reasoning. This training helps teachers give students the tools they need to become stronger readers.

We’re proud of our AHPS family for its continued commitment to student success! 📖👏
