***UPDATE***
Through continued communication with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, we have been informed that the active shooter situation in Waynesboro has been SECURED.

At this time, there is no known threat to Nelson County Public Schools. We appreciate the collaboration and communication of our law enforcement partners as we worked together to monitor this situation and ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Thank you to our families for your patience, support, and understanding. As always, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority.

NCPS Safety Update: We are aware of the active shooter situation at an elementary school in Waynesboro. NCPS is in communication with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office. There is no known immediate threat to NCPS or RRES at this time. Additional law enforcement will be present at RRES as a precaution. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.

NCPS Families — Your Voice Matters!

We invite parents and caregivers to get involved with the NCPS Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)! Whether your child has an IEP, a 504 Plan, is being evaluated, or you simply want to learn more about special education services, you are welcome.

Our first meeting is September 8 at 5:00 p.m. in the Nelson Middle School Library.

We are excited to bring our NCPS community together again for a day celebrating inclusion, achievement, friendship, and FUN at our 2nd Annual NCPS Special Olympics Feet Meet! Special Olympics Virginia

The Feet Meet is about so much more than competition. It gives students of different abilities opportunities to participate, connect, celebrate accomplishments, and experience the joy of being part of a team. Feet Meets are a great way to celebrate students’ developmental and social milestones while building friendships and a more inclusive school community.
We can't wait to cheer on our amazing NCPS athletes and celebrate everything they accomplish! Come ready for smiles, encouragement, school spirit, and a great day together!

Wear your Green & Gold on Friday, August 14, to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our students and schools and show your spirit!

📚 What a GREAT first day of school at NCPS! 🎒

Today, we proudly welcomed all of our students back for the 2026–2027 school year, and our schools were once again filled with smiles, laughter, excitement, and the energy that only our students can bring. Simply put... our schools just aren't the same without them!

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible teachers, staff, families, and community for making the first day such a success. We are excited for all the opportunities, growth, and memories that lie ahead, and can't wait to see what this school year has in store for our students.

And don’t forget, Friday, August 14, is NCPS Celebration Day / Green & Gold Day! 💚💛 Wear your green and gold as we celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our students and schools, including our Girls’ Soccer State Championship, outstanding performances at the 100th Virginia FFA State Convention, success in the State Stock Market Game, and so much more. 🎉💚💛 What a great way to kick off the school year💛💚🎉

Today, NCPS celebrated our first-ever Transition Day, welcoming our Pre-K, Kindergarten, 6th-grade, and 9th-grade students for their first day of school. This special day gave students entering school for the first time or transitioning to a new building a little extra time and attention to meet their teachers, learn about their classes and expectations, enjoy breakfast and lunch, and become more comfortable with their new school environment.
It was a wonderful opportunity to help our students begin this next step on their pathway to success!
